either Jesus Christ or Jimi Hendrix...both are considered Gods by some.
I think Hendrix wins, though
seriously, John Lee Hooker (not the beltway sniper!) and Lightnin' Hopkins are great too, as well as Chuck Berry.

Santana, May, J Page thats about it. Just to be contraversial, whats the fuss about Hendrix, I can't say I really like his music.

Tom Morello as much as it pains me to say is a very good guitarist. However he is not of the quality to be in the Top 10, never mind best. I would place him around 10 - 20 on my list of greats but no higher.

HENDRIX!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kirk Hammet, that solo in "one" is awesome.
Jimi's version of star spangled banner turned me off his stuff.
If not those, Clapton, Santana, or Morello.

I can't believe someone said Slash. This is too subjective for a definative answer so I'll list a few.
Jimi
Clapton
Jimmy Page
Stevie Ray Vaughn
As for punk guitarists I'd say the guy from the Living End.

best guitarist ever, this question is not an easy one to answer! but its along the means of hendrix, page, morello, hammet, i think all those dudes have their own talent and unique style, this is just one of those questions that just cant have an answer, kinda like whatcame first, chicked or the egg?

My favourites are Frank Zappa,Ritchie Blackmore,Mark Knopfler and Roger Waters.
But my vote goes to Ritchie Blackmore.

.... Vinnie Moore and Michael Angelo. Angelo's music sucks, but just take a look, he can play two guitars at once and has a quad guitar. Vinnie moore is incredible. The "best guitarist" should be judged on playing ability, not on "how cool" they are or their stage prescence. However, for stage presence, my vote goes to good'ol Angus and Malcom Young of AC/DC.
Best bassist is probably Ben Sheperd from Soundgarden.

Santan AND Hendrix. It's a tie.

It's impossible to determine who's the greatest guitarist. It's better to break it down into sub-topics. Like greatest heavy-metal guitarist or greatest blues guitarist. It's still hard to determine, but makes for a wider scope. Here's some of my favorite guitarists(not in order of greatness) Robin Trower, Akira Takasaki(LOUDNESS), Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi(BLACK SABBATH), Albert King, "Fast Eddie" (MOTORHEAD) Randy Rhodes(OZZY "Blizzard of Oz" and "Diary Of A Madman" era) Bernie Torme(GILLAN and Solo stuff), Dave Murray AND Adrian Smith(count as one because they play equally brilliant in IRON MAIDEN) Stevie Ray Vaughn, Glenn Tipton AND KK Downing(also count as one because of equal brilliance in JUDAS PRIEST [Ripper Owens Sucks!!!!] ) David Chastain(CHASTAIN and solo), Yngwie Malmsteen, Brian Robertson(THIN LIZZY and MOTORHEAD-"Another Perfect Day" LP), Ulrich Roth(SCORPIONS and ELECTRIC SUN), Greg Ginh(BLACK FLAG), Ritchie Blackmore(DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW), Lonnie Mack, Frank Marino(MAHOGANY RUSH), Deniz Tek(RADIO BIRDMAN), Angus Young(AC/DC), Alexi "Wildchild"(CHILDREN OF BODOM), Clapton,Page,Beck(ALL EQUAL AND ALL WERE IN THE YARDBIRDS), John Maclaughlin(MAHUVISHNU ORCHESTRA and MILES DAVIS-"*****es Brew" LP I know I made spelling errors on this one). I love music and probably have another 50 favorites. If not more.

TOMMY BOLIN!!!! Had he not overdosed in 1976, he would have been greatest post-Hendrix guitarist. Check out his playing on Billy Cobham's-"Spectrum" LP or his brilliant leads on Deep Purple's-"Come Taste The Band" LP. His solo material is mind blowing. To bad he loved drugs so much. He led a life and accomplished easily as much as Hendrix(except for having radio hits). Tommy Bolin+marching powder=a good time!!!!

Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Tony Iommi, Kirk Hammett, Slash and Izzy from Guns 'n' Roses (cheesy image, but quality guitarists), Tom Morello, Alex Lifeson, Randy Rhodes, Zakk Wylde, Eddie Van Halen, and a bunch more... the guys in Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, on and on.
Eric Clapton? I have never been impressed with him...
Jimmy Page? A million times harder to mimic than Clapton, but he doesn't get me goin' either...

Tone, phrasing & note choices, May, Gilmour, inclined May first but can't decide. Inspiring and Django Reinheart is way up there. Then Knopfler is about 4th. Then I have Clapton, Hendrix...lots of guys actually. Then come downagain and I am talking about the level of Rhodes but I like many guitarists.

everyone forgets Duane Allman.
Without Hendrix, most of these cats would still be in their parent's basements
Of course, without BB King and Robert Johnson, the first two people to truly master the instrument it'd all be for naught.
And, of course, Eric Clapton's guitar work for "Blind Faith" is seen as some of the best of all time

How could I have forgotten Petrucci? Malmsteen is good to9 whoever mentioned it, as are Vai and Satch, however speed is only so much to playing. It is a tool not the be all and end all.

I'll be seeing satriani, Vai, and Malmsteen in concert in a few weeks. Quite excited.
