Does anyone know any decent, complex ones, ones with plenty of variables? Not online, multiplayer ones where you spend all day declaring war and selling the shitty resources your e-country produces?

I'd like to know if there's anyone ones where you can basically input a change in a certain public policy and it allows you get anticipated feedback from various demographic groups based on some kind of 'opinion models'? So you could for example cut taxes to 5% across the board and see who would support you, who wouldn't, would you win the next election, would you not?

Well none that I know of.

Its an area which does not often get the time spent on it. Only a handful of PC games have every been produced based on politics.

Its hard to predict as well, any simulator would have to be based on a series of sterotypings as well as a "if some claims they are member of X group they must follow the core concepts of X to the extreme". There is an awful lot of factors.

I have heard some good things about a game called democracy, however, it had some major flaws. My friend who told me about it had a high tech nation which had cut science education to next to nothing including the teaching of region in science classes.

Political analysis is based around history as its starting point. This has caused issues with subjects such as climate change. Its an interesting decussion and I had the pleasure on reading a rather interesting journal article on the subject.

Well if you are interested to see what could happen if policy was changed, there is normally journal articles covering some topics. (If you can access them of course, uni libraries have hard copies which the public can access, at my uni anyway).. :)

Look into Paradox games.

A million times this.

Hearts of Iron II or Victoria: Revolutions should interest you. If you want, PM me and I'll get you a Rapidshare link for them.

It's more war-based than political, but it does have some political elements. Civiliziation IV is alright. It is highly rated. It bored me fairly quickly, but I don't have the patience for it.

Democracy 2 is okay for this, it will do what you asked but once you get everything where you want it to be, the game ceases to be too interesting.

It is an online multiplayer one, but it's not your usual crap like Cybernations (God what a shitty game, do you remember we used to have like five threads a day on it in Chit-Chat). Basically you set up your own party, choose a nation and contest elections there. You win votes by proposing and voting on Bills, and by voting certain ways you can win over certain demographics. I quite like it, though I haven't played it in ages. Particracy II is out now, I'm not sure what new features it has.

Particracy 2 is crap, the classic is way better.

Capitalism 2 is sold in CD form from every Target that I've seen. It's a good game.

The guild can be bought from gog.com .

War simulators are entirely different. The best ones are not political.
