It doesn't matter if the immigrant is illegal or not, the decision to hire still ultimately rests with the employer, not the prospective employee. People hire illegal immigrants because they can get away with paying them less.

Nativism has a long and disgusting and yes bizarre and hypocritical history in the US. The French were the first: hey thanks for defeating the British and helping with out revolution... eh? Oh you're having a revolution now... fucking french get out of here with you crazy ideas of Equality and Liberty!

Then there's the Irish - who apparently, according to 1800s nativists were clearly not white people. Then the Chineese who were kidnaped and brought against their will to build the rail roads - AND THEN BLAMED FOR TAKING PEOPLE'S JOBS! To be fair it was common to see in the want ads: "WANTED: Manual Labor - Must be kidnapable, must not understand English or have any idea what contenent they are brought to and enslaved in, no Irish need apply".

Personally, I find nativists too scary to make fun of. The ones who I do think are hilarious are the right-wing "One-World" conspiracy theorists. Basically any of their theories boil down to: something American neo-liberal capitalist policies have forced on other countries, may be happening here because of evil Mexicans/British/Canadians/UN. It's like the anti-globalization movement turned on its head and made nationalist and xenophobic. They are really really terrified that Obama plans to build a freeway that goes from Mexico to Canada... THROUGH THE US! Did you hear me? A figgin' multi-lane road - it's more opressive than living in Falluja!

Its the same sort of thing that happened in Nazi Germany. The economy goes to shit, but instead of blaming the people in power who fucked the working class, the blame is placed on some minority group. Whenever I hear someone start up about "the Mexicans are invading and stealing all our [insert any item here]", I immediately think "Nazi". Unfortunately, it is incomparably more socially-acceptable in the States to bash immigrants than it is to be a Nazi. Anti-immigrant discrimination seems to have taken the center-stage from anti-Arab discrimination, though both are still prevalent and usually generally explicit in their expressions.
