The Doors - Peace Frog
in Peace Frog, Jim sings "Blood in the streets in the town of New Haven"
hes talking about New Haven, Connecticut
was there a battle there or something during the American Revolution?
cause also in the song he sings "Blood in the streets in the town of Chicago"
there hes talking about the Mafia wars and shit
now was there a big battle fought in New Haven, a massacre?

anyone?
My only advice is type it in in the search bar at the bottom of the page. I have nothing, except it may be a reference to the 'City Upon The Hill' legend inherent in America and Canada during colonial times.

"blood on the streets in the town of chicago" is about the anti-war riots at the 1968 democratic convention."blood on the streets in the town of new haven" is about when he got arrested on stage in new haven for obscenity and was beaten up by the cops backstage.

He talks about new haven, ct. because that is where he was arrested for indecent exposure and foul language on dec. 10th 1967 (i have the poster for that show in my bedroom).

Beat me to it :)
There's a lot of cool stuff in his songs, I fucking love the Doors, and Jim in particular! My username is "Morrison's Lament" on most message boards except this one, I was in a militant mood when I joined here (my nick refers to a sword) ;)
One song I highly recommend is "Universal Mind", not many people have heard it but it's one of my very favorite songs. I belieev it's about the pain of realizing the truth, while at the same time not wanting to go back to ignorance, here are the lyrics:
"I was doing time in the universal mind, I was feeling fine! I was turning keys, I was setting people free, I was doing allright!
Then you came along
with a suitcase and a song,
turned my head around!
Now i'm so alone
just looking for a home
in every place i seeeee.........
I'm the freedom man!!
I'm the freedom man!!
I'm the freedom maaaaan, that's how lucky I am!!!"

of course, things really boiled over with the whole obscenity thing when the lizard king himself whipped out his lizard (and the audience put a goat on the stage), where he was arrested, and then went to Paris for the last stand. :cuba:

have you seen the movie yet?
It made me depressed. They spent about an hour on his downward spiral (if you can call it that, I would have enjoyed that kind of life) and about 30 minutes on his good sides.

nope, haven't seen the movie yet, but Its on the list...along with "steal this movie" which is about abbie hoffman. I just watched the movie "hendrix" a little while ago, though.

how was that?
was it collected footage or a real movie?
Mr Mojo Risin
1st November 2003, 02:59
it was filmed recently, involves some good audio tracks but the actor playing hendrix was not too good at even faking the guitar parts.

I thought oliver stone's movie was terrible. it was an even bigger dissapointment cause i expected a lot out of it knowing how big of a fan stone is. but he had to go and fuck it up with some really boring material about a man who was anything but.
i'd love to see some of morrison's films. i think he only really made 2, and only one survived, called the lost hiway i think... he spelled it HWY though and i never got why until i read an interview he said he wanted to do an album cover with all dogs because dogs spelled backward is god. funny guy. anyway i really loved the lords and the new creatures and i thought his ideas were brilliant. its a shame he never got to explore film more. he could've been great one more thing. i thought most of his ideas were pretty directly taken from artaud's theatre and its double, but the form of the ideas still blows me away.
the spectator is a dying animal
cinema, heir of alchemy, last of an erotic science
the appeal of cinema lies in the fear of death.
film spectators are quiet vampires
films are collections of dead pictures which are given artificial insemination.
the voyeur is the masturbator, the mirror his badge, the window his prey.
...stuff like that still blows my mind. i think morrison is THE most under-rated poet of the 20th century.
dhul- just what the hell does morrison's lament mean if not that you're a cock? also what album is that song on, i've only heard it on absolutely live?

i love the doors so much, i always though the newhaven was a reference to newhaven in england but i am most likely wrong.
My fav doors song is "hello i love you" or "Riders on the Storm" both are very cool.
I reckon him and Bob Dyland are the two best poets of the latter half of this century.

Excuse me, but you forgot the man.
read the poem in the liner notes of "Band of Gypsys" and you'll know what I mean.

its so cool though!
Jimi is good but Bob and Jim are way better, something like All Along The Watchtower has awesome lyrics and although jimi's version is better its Bobs Song. Also Subtereanen Homesick Blues is a great piece of music, one of his best tunes.

i was gonna say, "hello I love you" is one of those songs that sounds like the record company made them do, to make a hit pop single. Kind of like "She's so fine" and "little miss lover," by hendrix, although I think these songs are still pretty good.
I have to disagree, though. Bob Dylan can write a pretty rhyme, and his lyrics were substantial, but in terms of pure psychadelic poetry, jimi and jim are the best.

"She's so Fine" and "Little Miss Lover," - weren't they the songs Noel Redding wrote and sung?
I think that was more to do with differences in style than record company bullshit. I like those tunes.
Mr Mojo Risin
3rd November 2003, 04:02
yeah, those were noel's songs, but I think they are very out of place considering the other music they played. I too like those songs, but they are very much in a pop vein.

'hello i love you' was written by morrison before there even was a doors.
Sidewalk crouches at her feet
Like a dog that begs for something sweet
Do you hope to make her see, you fool?
Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?
She's walking down the street
Blind to every eye she meets
Do you think you'll be the guy
To make the queen of the angels sigh?
whats wrong with those lyrics? not his best, but still better than 'i love you like a fat kid loves cake'
Mr Mojo Risin
3rd November 2003, 20:49
that is more poetic version of all the crappy lyrics we hear today from all the mickey mouse bullshitters (timberlake, spears, etc.) that goes something like "Girl, i love you baby i need you oh yeah!" Morrisson does a good job of making this somewhat poetic, but the song is still very shallow.

No, he wrote and sung "She's so Fine" and "Little Miss Strange"
Mr Mojo Risin

she's so fine I'm not sure about, but you said "little miss strange." he said "Little Miss Lover." Maybe a source of some confusion. And I think redding wrote little miss strange anyway.

I think the story was that Jim got maced backstage by a security guard or cop thinking he was just some kid hanging around. In retaliation, during the concert, Jim called the guard/cop over to the stage during the performance and proceeded to piss in the guys face.
It was definitely New Haven, Connecticut.

In fact a lot of my drug abuse is in a similar vain to his - I am currently starting to drink heavily and get fat and bearded. I'm on my way!! =D

I guess that's one way to relate to your music, but G, we need to have an intervention man. The first step is recognizing you're an alcoholic. Anyway, if you're taking after Jim, I've gotta warn you: Stay out of paris. Especially, you should stay out of paris bathtubs. That's wehre jim met his demise.

although i guess that tub was his office because of his skin condition, and dying at work's not cool...

yeah love is definately shallow....
with morrison i have a hard time believing that the song is simply just a love song. he didn't really write songs like that. all the other doors song that i would consider 'pop' were kriegers songs- light my fire, love me 2times, etc. maybe morrison was trying to be ironic. his humor is manufactured just so you don't know if he was joking or not.
Mr Mojo Risin

well, this may be a bit off topic, but your post brought it to my mind. I was at this philosophy seminar by an autistic speaker (Temple Grandin) who said that autistic people don't understand humor, and that she understood it only by teaching herself what jokes are and the structure of humor. Interesting. Also, she said she thinks in pictures, and her slideshow was just various pictures that always bring to mind the same thing for her, and so her train of thought was just series of pictures.
Doesn't belong in music, just an interesting thing perhaps.

5th November 2003, 19:51
very interesting. She was obviously very mildly autistic, right?
its odd that she was a woman as well-Autism is something like 4x as likely to affect boys. My cousin is autistic and has been studied intensely because she is a girl.
Mr Mojo Risin
5th November 2003, 23:50
Yes, Temple Grandin (Who is a professor in animal studies at Colorado State U) is quite a mild case, and has found lots of success designing, oddly enough, cattle butchering plants, since she can apparently visualize what will make a cow anxious. She works on all the chutes that lead up to where they are slaughtered, and I guess is very good at it.

i didn't hear about this until now. Lack of compassion is a terrible thing, truly, and as I alluded to in some other post about nazis, Hannah Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem", a book on the war crimes trial of a nazi (Eichmann), terrible things aren't caused by evil people, but by people who just put themselves and their own advancement, whether it be in getting career advancement or a good laugh, ahead of their compassion for others. Those kids weren't necessarily evil (though I won't vouch for them) but they certainly lacked compassion, and that's all it takes. Poor kid.
Alejandro C
6th November 2003, 07:09
yeah.. things like that leave a very heavy saddness on my mind. i've been depressed all day just thinking about that.
Mr Mojo Risin
6th November 2003, 07:13
some things just seem like they will never change, and when kids do things like this to other kids, it just makes any view of the world depressed and pessimistic due to the total lack of respect among people.
