View Full Version : A little about me and some general questions

I'm from Southern California, which for most might seem like a good start seeing as California is mostly liberal. I live, however, surrounded by Republicans; and at that not even moderate ones. My entire family speaks of liberals as demons or satanic figures who only want to raise taxes and support 'terrorism.' And up to February of this year I was right along with them, loving Bush, extremely homophobic: everything stereotypically associated with the political right. But that February I went to a Youth and Government conference in Sacramento. There a friend in the room next to me introduced me to Socialism. Something inside of me was deeply interested. After 3 days of research when I got home, my worldview was radically changed. Since then I have done nothing but research Marxism, Socialism, looking at historical engagements through a new perspective, and my personal favorite; Ernesto Guevara. My family and all of those around me are still hardcore republicans, so my ideals remain hidden; not wanting to commit social suicide, but slowly trying to introduce them to it.

And so here were some questions that I had:

What line of work is most acceptable for a Marxist? As in; my friends ask what work should I do what clothes should I wear; for I cannot help feeling like a hypocrite. What car? These little details would be greatly appreciated, though I know the answer to some of these is that you simply have to go along with it.

Thanks anyways,
Marxist Madman :che:

And the clothes have to be grey overalls with red and black cloth caps. Just kidding.

You can work anywhere you want. You can even own factories etc and still be a Marxist. Engels owned a factory and was a capitalist himself.:D

My mother always told me that in order to be a good Marxist I need to eat my veggies.

Wear what you want, drive what you want, do any job you want. None of that is of any consequence, really.

And welcome. :)

Car is irrelevant clothes are irrelevant.

Job is relevant. I'd say the only thing which restrict you are policeman (I grappled with this one when I was younger and now am firmly anti-police), obvious things like being a CEO, any job where you have the power to hire and fire, being a wage exploiter, i.e. a member of the bourgeoisie, being a shopowner, being in the Army, and also any role when your like a foreman/lower manager i.e. a worker who sides with the boss.

This would leave like 90% of jobs open to you. Everything from fireman to bus driver to nurse to teacher etc.

thanks. I just find it hard to buy anything these days; I feel like a hypocrite for supporting giant corporations, and who knows how many were made in sweatshops. Perhaps survivalism is the answer?

Perhaps survivalism is the answer? Its not. Class struggle is.

Not buying from those corporations won't do anything, it's fine. Class struggle and socialist revolution is what is needed, not individuals boycotting products.

Welcome,

It sounds like you have a hard time with your family, but well done on being able to change your views and think for yourself. It's not always easy in that kind of environment. To be honest, I've never heard of such a sudden change of opinion!

And in response to your questions:

You can do whatever job you want - we're not going to stop you. But personally I'd avoid any sort of 'business' professions or things to do with finance and...well anything that my parents call 'the greed industry'.

Wear whatever clothes you like. Have whatever can you want as well. Too many people have an image of communism and socialism as something that controls people and stops them from being free, but actually it's the opposite. When I started reading about what it would be like in a 'true' communist society, I felt a massive weight lift from my shoulders. So yes, do anything you want (as long as it doesn't involve killing people, of course ;)).

Everything you can buy is made with exploited labor.

And no that's ridiculous

What line of work is most acceptable for a Marxist?

Any, or none. It doesn't matter. Your life is yours.

As in; my friends ask what work should I do what clothes should I wear;

Same applies as above. Dress how you like. That absurd idea of the suppression of the individual, or of some bleak appearance is not something communists hold up.

The same applies.

Also Guevara is dull. Look up Durruti or Luxemburg.

Hi, welcome to the forum! Nice to see that you where so open-minded to learn more about leftism! :)
There's a Che subforum (http://www.revleft.com/vb/ernesto-che-guevara-f13/index.html) in the History forum, if you didn't discover it yet.
