Whiskey in the Jar is my favourite. Metallica tried to rock it up and did quite well but I still prefer the original. I knew it off by heart when I was 4.

whiskey in the jar is one. jerry garcia has a rendition of that if we're thinking of the same song. it's pretty rad.

now, i have an obsession with this album "freedom and rain" that june tabor and the oysterband teamed up to do. are "susie clelland" and "dark-eyed sailor" irish songs? i think so. pardon me for not doing my research but i'm pretty sure there are. rock with that celtic spin on it is really awesome.

a couple of other good songs on there are "farewell finisterre" (which is translated to breton to english) and "valentine's day is over" (by billy bragg). and their version of velvet underground's "all tomorrow's parties" is awesome too.

eh. so i got off on a tangent. great album though. check it out.

#Moderation Mode

Slightly musical this topic don't ya think?

I really like Thin Lizzy's version of Whisky in the Jar, The Fields of Athenry and whatever the name of the song the Irish boys sing before a Rugby match are good as well.

I don't know the names of many (any?) other songs, but I like our Traditional music a lot. Every weekthere a bit of an auld Ceilí going on on Teilifís na Gaelige, so I'll stick that on if I think of it.

The rugby song is "Ireland's Call" seeing as how the team includes Northern Irish players as well, and it wouldn't really be fair to make them sing the Republic's National Anthem against their will.

All stand please: http://www.copcity.com/anthems/ireland.mid

Thats true happyguy, but when they play in Dublin they sing both!

That's why I love it.
I don't really like the Irish national anthem anymore, anyway.

"Soldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland".
Speak for yourself, bucko.

hmm...interesting topic. As a professional (meaning I played for money :) )Penny-Whistler/Flautist of 6 years, whose brother is among the best Fiddlers in the world, I would say I have a lot of favorites.

Whisky in the Jar is bluegrass, sorry to say, and has never seen Irish shores. It is as Irish as "My Irish Eyes Are Smiling", written by a German Tourist (or as American as Washington crossing the Delaware, also done by a German).

Dannyboy is also called "The London Derry-Aire", but it sounds like the London Dereaire (SP. Wrong, word for ass), which we figured would look pale and fleshy.

My favorites are fast ones that sound somber or depression because of the chords they are in. Examples include "The Curlew" jig and "Shadowfax", written by a student of Liz Carol's

sorry to be a contrited asshole, but I am tired

my favourites: The Fields of Athenry, Biddy Mulligan, Dirty Old Town, Home Boys Home, Weila Waila, Whiskey on a Sunday (I could listen to this one for hours!!!), Ringsend Rose, and Molly Malone

whiskey on a sunday is v good! Whiskey in a jar was played by the Dubliners at Lansdowne road and was written by a kerry man! and Danny Boy is scottish!

I dont know any (besides Wiskey in the jar)!

But should i check it out?

dude, if Whiskey in the Jar was written by a Kerry guy, then my entire life is a lie. Of course, the Kerry people do like their banjos in traditional music, and banjo shotoffs are the mainstay of bluegrass, so who the fuck would know :)

No offense swedish but u shudnt even b asking the question!
A hell of a lot of Irish music uses the banjo rastafari! The Dubliners CDs always have at least 2 solos on the banjo on it! The rocky road to Dublin uses it, more in A Mile From Dublin but they still use it as the basis of their music!

I'm not sure what the song is called, I think it's called Man on the M.T.B.A. It wa re-done by the Irish punk band the Dropkick Murphys.

The chorus is like "Did he ever return ? No ! He never returned and his fate is still unknown. He may ride the rails beneath the streets of Boston, he's the man (skinhead) that never returned.

I am aware of this GCusack. I am just saying that the Banjo, an African Instrument, is not traditional. The style of banjo-playing that you are hearing on your Dubliners albums originated in Kerry.

The best album title of all time is "Paddy Keenan Plays with Himself"

Hmm.As has been said,a live band in any pub does it for me.But favourites..."Follow me up to Carlow" or "Valley of Knockanure"are great any time.

Whiskey in the Jar is probabley my favourite too (live version with the Dubliners and the Pogues). Metallica were actually covering Thin Lizzys version of Whiskey... though.
