Mass panic: police burst into FC St.Pauli fans pub

Hamburg, 7 July 2009: four teeth knocked out, severe sprains and bruises, a mass panic as well as dozens of guests throwing up due to tear gas thats the bottom line of a massive police operation in the premises of the FC St.Pauli fans pub Jolly Roger during the night from 4 to 5 July 2009.

About 100 guests were celebrating a peaceful birthday party when two water cannon vehicles and several police units positioned forces in front of the bar.

Although there were no violent provocations against police officers coming from the guests, batton, tear gas and water cannon attacks were launched by the police forces without without any prior notice only shortly afterwards. The events culminated in the forceful storming of the locality, where about 60 guests had seeked shelter: Within just a few minutes, the entire pub was full of tear gas. The guests fled to the toilets and the beverage storage room in panic, whilst mummed police forces with batons ran after them. Were still shocked and aghast. Ulrike S. was in the basement together with almost 30 other guests: We stood there and just couldnt get out. Above in the pub you couldnt breathe anymore and in front of the pub, the water cannons kept shooting. Who should we have called for help? 110 ? (= emergency number for the police in Germany)

Like Spiegel Online reported last Monday already, not even a press ID prevented the officers from knocking out four of some journalists teeth with their batons.

The main purpose of the operation remains unclear: neither arrests nor ID checks were conducted. Apart from injuring bystanders, intimidating them and causing panic, the procedure seems to have had no objective whatsoever. Tay Eich, member of the Supervisory Board of FC St.Pauli: The police operation at and inside the Jolly Roger is totally unacceptable and needs to be clarified completely

Last Monday, more than 100 affected people gathered in the Jolly Roger to reflect the events and talk about further proceedings. As an immediate measure, a donations account was set up for to support the costs for medical treatment and legal actions of the victims. On top of that, a demonstration is planned, taking place after the friendly match of FC St.Pauli vs Hearts of Midlothian this week on Friday, 10 July 2009.

What the hell. It seems that news has a tendency to be bad these days, what with Midnight dying, Metal Church breaking up, Job for a Cowboy releasing a new album, and this. At this rate, the Hearts game is going to be spoiled by the assholish minority of Hearts fans.
