In order to do the math correctly, I just substitute the word god for the word money. Then, all the religious books sort of make sense.

The clergy do not lie for money. They lie for power. To be able to deceive the masses so easily means all the power you can seize. But religions like Christianity is going the way of Paganism (falling).

A religion with a hierarchy is not good and just another way of exploitation.

"Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history." –Pat Robertson

Don't be fooled by their floofy, funky garb - I hear the Swiss Guards are actually pretty hardcore, or at least used to be.

Of course that doesn't change the fact that they'd be swamped by any army worthy of the name - there's only a reinforced company of them, after all.

You forget that within a capitalist economic system, money is often equivalent to power - at least, it buys power. The clergy lie for many reasons, money is most certainly one of them. They also have to lie because they are preserving and enacting an out-dated and archaic system of belief which is confronted and contradicted in all areas of existence.

When you have no evidence for your dogmatism, you must lie.

Well it depends which religion you're talking about. Catholic priests are not super rich or anything. But evangelical preachers like Joel Olsteen are.

Helberdiers and Swiss pikemen were famous for using a phalanx in battle. (Phalanx is just a tactic)

Helberdiers and Swiss pikemen were famous for using a phalanx in battle. (Phalanx is just a tactic)Only semantically; that is in the sense that we refer to any close order formation. In military terms there are significant differences between the ancient phalanx and the medieval/modern pike square. There's a passing resemblance with the spears/pikes but that's be all. Most notably the later European pike formations were considered part of a combined arms force (with cavalry and muskets) rather than simply trying to slowly push the opposition over

Of course that doesn't change the fact that they'd be swamped by any army worthy of the name - there's only a reinforced company of them, after allWell you hardly need an army to defend an enclave in the centre of Rome. The Vatican's defences have scaled with the challenges facing it. The old Papal States used to have a decent sized military (albeit entirely ineffective) and a decent chunk of this, such as the Palatine Guard, survived until just a few decades ago

Edit: As to actual quotes, here's a suitably florid passage:

O God, Lord God of thy priests, rise up now and show thyself God.
They cry out, thine elect, thine aspirants to heavenward, whose faith is as flame;
O thou the Lord God of our tyrants, they call thee, their God, by thy name.
By thy name that in hell-fire was written, and burned at the point of thy sword,
Thou art smitten, thou God, thou art smitten; thy death is upon thee, O Lord.

"I believe that the Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans...I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are -- were recipients of the judgment of God for that...There was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades.... The Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment."

This is my kind of feminism: socialism's an obvious support, but leaving their husbands is good because it leaves all the men to me; and killing their children is good because I fucking hate kids. I don't know why he's being all ranty when there's nowt wrong with his conception of feminism
