More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.

"I heard this lady, she was like, 'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?' She's like, 'I'm scared they might do something to my child,'" said camper Dymire Baylor.

The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership. But the campers' first visit to the pool suggested otherwise.

"When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool," Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. "The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately."

There were too many at the time so the mixed group of kids were denied access. They were also given a full refund and allowed to come back at a re-scheduled time.

Thanks. I hadnt seen that bit. When you say it's a private pool though, I'm not sure if that's significant or not. I mean, if you mean private merely in the sense that it just wasnt publicly owned, then it still raises questions about discrimination. If it was somebody's pool at thier home or something, although it probably indicates that the owner had more money than anyone really should, it does fall into the catagory of a personal possession I suppose.

Well the original issue was that the city had closed down on public pools, forcing the children and others to turn to privately owned clubs, etc. This particular club was owned by a group of old whiney board members who didn't want a ton of kids running around the pool they paid for. That was the reason for them to close the pool. I think they're idiots for allowing so many kids in that they had to close it off to others. Should have judged better.

Maybe it's through bad experiences with large groups of blacks that caused the flee. I know a few friends of mine who were racially targeted at a majority black school. One of them is a full blown racist because of it!

Past experiences with "groups" of people is irrelevant. Everyone has had bad experiences with different groups of people they don't end up discriminating against.

But to the point at hand, if the day camp paid $1900 to the swim club for access and the club accepted, that constitutes a contract that the swim club was legally bound to honor. They breached. The day camp should at least have gotten their money back. Seems like an actionable situation to me. I'd sue the pants off of them.

A question this raises is that if the swim club was that uptight, why did they take the money in the first place? Could they have been that stupid? Could the report be, OTOH, misleading as to why the club turned them away? Where mainstream media is concerned, I take very little for granted - there are many axes to grind and media is not immune from bias these days, sad to say.

In any event, there have always been assholes among us and I suspect there will continue to be for a very, very long time to come.

I know where you are coming from. The liberal left, not the TRUE left, neglects issues pertaining to the White section of the workers community.
