He didn't smoke too much. No way. He is perfect. He is the perfect musician. His music is amazing.
I remember being in Amsterdam, I brought a minidisc walkman with me, and a pair of shitty little earphones. I had one disc with Jimi on it.
One night, when we had taken some mushrooms and were back at the hotel, me and a mate were listening to Machine Gun (one "ear" of the phones each). It was one of the most fantastic experiences of my life. It was absolutely mental. I was in total euphoria listening to that music. I remember thinking "this is it. This is the best I'm ever going to feel, I can die now. I'm on top of the mountain of reality. Everything is perfect.
That song, Machine Gun is so brilliant. Half way through it, I was just mesmerised by the solo that Jimi as taking me on, then suddenly the bassline, and drums fill came flying in, it was like a cluster bomb of ecstasy exploded in my brain. I had forgotten what song it was, and that just brought it all back home, baby.
Afterwards I was completely worn out. I couldn't listen to the song again, because everything just seemed like a total come down. I was afraid to put on the song the next night because it would have been too much pressure.
The intensity was something else. During it, I actually wanted it too end because it was too much pleasure. It was a crazy experience. I can now answer a firm and resounding "yes!" to the Experience's first album's title.
I strongly recommend Jimi to one and all.

The whole Band of Gypsies/Buddy Miles years were interesting and very much more jazz/funk oriented, rather than blues/rock I thought.
"Machine Gun" honestly provides the same experience to me as "Giant Steps" or "A Love Supreme" (Coltrane is something to sit through and listen to, similar to the Clash's Sandanista album, I have found-good when high, too!)

Jimi was definately heading towards something completly amazing towards the end of his short life. Live at The Fillmore East has an incredible feel to it. The trio with Miles and Cox, I think, was a much more solefull musical direction than with Mitch and Noel.

My brother's always trying to get me into Miles Davis, but I can't really get my head out of reggae at the moment. I've heard some real nice stuff by him though. just doesn't get me going like a Lee Perry discomix, though.
King Tubby was very inspired by Miles Davis and Coltrane and the like. Quite similar in fact.

ahh...Miles Davis was OK.
he was cool enough, but he always seemed like an arrogant asshole-but it IS the music that counts I guess
"*****es' Brew" is probably my favorite of his albums (good title at least)

much more soleful, yes. but not as experimental in many rights. I always thought the Cox and Miles should have been the ones behind works like "Crosstown Traffic" though, and not Mitch and Noel (who were slightly fruity methinks, but good at what they did).

I know it's kind of cliché, but I always liked Kind of Blue by Miles the best.

Round About Midnight is my favorite Miles Davis album.

yeah, Kind of Blue is good. It is a little too big-bandy for me though still. So is Birth of the Cool, thats real full of it.
Big Band always struck me as the artist saying "Hey! Look at me! I'm White!!!" and I never thought that was cool. Count Basie was sort of kickass however.
