has anyone else read this?

this is easily the most incredible book i've read in a while. it's a crash course lesson in the 20th century history of the dominican republic through the family of oscar wao. he's like the antithesis of the dominican male living in new jersey. he's fat, nerdy and a virgin. his friends refer to his glasses as "anti-pussy devices." he likes comic books and tolkien and pretty much only dreams of falling in love. his sister is a hardass constantly butting heads with their mother. their mother 'escaped' the dominican republic only to end up in new jersey, a single mother with two kids she doesn't know what to do with. but i can't even begin to explain it there.

i've been really into chicano literature as of about 6 months ago. the culture of USA/latin american borders is like this really weird tightrope walk that people are constantly forced to sturggle with. how do people deal with the transition to a different culture, how do you find out what is really you? what do you do when your primary characteristics are not accepted in either one? how does anyone ever find the courage to accept their fate?
