This might seem a little far-fetched its not entirely serious but it is an altenative interpretation for the elusive meaning to the hit Stairway to Heaven

A communist's interpretation of A Stairway to Heaven by RedComrade

"Theres a lady whose sure all that glitters is gold, and shes buying a stairway to heaven"

The capitalist class is constanlty purchasing and investing in any promising invention, property, trend, or stash of resources that look promising (if it shines its gold, its a money maker) and by doing this they are buying paradise they constantly buy up everything profitable that gurantees a good quality of life, they buy heaven

"When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed, with a word she can get what she came for, shes buying a stairway to heaven"

The upper class do not have to purchase what they need in stores, they already own the property, they effectively control society and the means to a higher material quality of life, or the the stores which the common man has to buy things from. With a word her will is enforced because a capitalist state is one in which money is more powerful than votes, the most well financed canidates for president will win and the canidates who protect the rich will be the most financed. The rich are getting richer and living better lives, they are buying paradise

"Theres a sign on the wall, but she wants to be sure 'cause you know sometimes words have two meanings"

Supposed capitalist democracies preach equal power to all but like it says what they preach and what is real are two different things or meanings, a capitalist state is one in which money is more powerful than votes, the most well financed canidates for president will win and the canidates who protect the rich will be the most financed. The capitalist class is generally hostile to democracy however, and prefers dictatorships, remember all the puppet dictatorships from deterring democracy?, nuff said, democracy is the enemy of capitalism

"In a tree by the brook there's a song bird who sings, sometimes all our thoughts are misgiven, ooooo it makes me wonder"

Religion sings a tune to confuse the working class and convince them there thoughts of revolt are misgiven and that since things will all be perfect when we die we should not be quick to claim our freedom if it means violence and questioning the set order because the church and its lies cannot stand up to questioning. There lies sew the seeds of doubt and conflict within the working class.

"Theres a feeling I get when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving"

West is associated with death and the end, he is looking to the end of capitalism and crying for it to leave, it could also relate to the previous verse. The suffering and toil of the working class often make them very embrasive of notions such as heaven told to them by the songbird of the church to escape from their suffering.

"In my thoughts I have seen, rings of smoke through the trees, and the voices of those who stand looking, ooooo it makes me wander"

Class conflict and the eventual violent overthrow of the ruling class are coming ( rings of smoke from the battle), the product of history (history in this is those who stand looking or those observing the passage of time) will be the eventual overthrow of capitalism and the rich as part of the march of human progress

"And its whispered that soon, if we all call the tune, then the piper will lead us to reason"

The overthrow of capitalism is coming, if the workers of the world unite, then the liberating ideology of communism will lead the working class to their freedom

"And a new day will dawn, for those who stand long, and the forests will echo with laughter"

The overthrow of capitalism will be marked my a new chapter in human history of a more peaceful, fair, and happy society

"If theres a bustle in your hedgerow dont be alarmed now its just a spring clean for the may queen"

The working class are not perfect innocent great people, this does not mean they do not deserve their freedom, many of theiir faults (crime, religious fervor, drug use, general stupidity) are the product of capitalism and are solved by socialism

"Yes there are two paths you can go by but in the long run theres still time to change the road your on and it makes me wonder"

Under capitalism you can either choose the path of the exploiter or the path of the exploited, however there is another, better road of communism

"Your head is humming and it wont go in case you dont know the pipers calling you to join him"

Everywere you look there is suffering and injustice, capitalism offers no solution, inevitably deep down you know socialism must and will come to pass

"Dear lady can you hear the wind blow, and did you know your stairway lies on the whispering wind"

The winds of change, the coming destruction of capitalism and the arrival of socialism, are blowing, the reall stairway to heaven for the people lies in this wind of change, the wind of communism

"And as we wind on down that road our shadows taller than our soul there walks a lady we all know who shines bright light and wants to show how everything still turns to gold"

As one travels on the road of capitalism the darkness of suffering (symbolized by the shadow) ways heavy on ones soul and is a burden to happiness, the nagging doubt of greed or the capitalists way tempts the mind with rewards attainable only for a chosen few

"And if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last when all is one and one is all to be a rock and not to roll"

If you look deep down inside you know communism is the solution, it offers the hope of uniting the rich and the poor as one human race (one is all) and the bounty of life is open to all not a tiny select few

"And shes buying a stairway to heaven"

The rich continue to go on living their sheltered lives of paradise, something must be done

If you're into dissecting things like that, you should take a look at some short stories. A few come to mind are "Bliss" by Katherine Mansfield, or "Araby" by James Joyce.

Look for some deeper meanings in THAT shit! They're there, and you'll be smarter for it.

I've heard something about the song being satanic... told to me by a preachers daughter!

But even though I like the work you've done and I find more realistic to be a song about capitalism and not "THE DEVIL"

That's a cool interpretation, unfortuantely you could probably break any song down like that.
