Bob was originally going to call the song "I Shot the Police" but it was judged to have been to inflamatory so it was cleaned up nice and shiny so that the west could palette it.

I can't remember where I got that info (probably his bio, "Catch a fire"), but here are some links:

Shit. And to think this whole time I was listening to the Eric Clapton version. I didn't even know it was by Bob Marley.

Eric Clapton is a piece of garbage who once told an audience to support the fascist National Front.

I don't think that info was in Catch a Fire because I read that book 3 times and I never remember hearing that.

As for Clapton, did he really tell an audience to support the National Front ? I find that hard to believe. Not calling you a liar, that just seems insane.

I read it in a book about rock and roll, actually. All it said was he got into some trouble after telling fans that they should support the National Front candidate in the local election.

It was a long time ago.

I've always considered the Eric Clapton version to be a vile piece of overwrought filth... but that's just me.

I love Bob Marley & The Wailers, but that bloody Legend cd will never be in my collection. Once great songs watered down and diluted so ignorant white North Americans could hear some "reggae" on their radio stations.

Most of Bob Marley and the Wailers' stuff was watered down anyway. I don't really like Bob Marley and the Wailers. I like the Wailers.

I even like the watered down version of Catch a Fire, even though I don't like the idea of what Chris Blackwell did, I think he did a really, really great job of it.
That redneck guitarist, and Rabbit Brundrick - it's all great stuff.

But the Lee Perry produced stuff is ten thousand times better.
