Comrades:
I just posted the following to the English-language forum of the Venezuela-based Aporrea.org forum, and I repost it here:
Isn't it revealing how the US responds differently to different crises?
A nuclear weapons test in North Korea produces a virtual blockade; election of a candidate the US and Israeli governments don't approve of begets support of opposition actions, threats of possible military action; the overthrow of the democratically-elected President of Honduras produces...condemnations worldwide, including from the OAS and US government...but no cut in trade or aid from the US.
Another response is possible, however: an ALBA response.
Nicaragua and El Salvador could seal their borders with Honduras; ALBA naval assets could blockade Honduras; and ALBA military assets...including crack Venezuelan paratroops and Cuban veterans who fought side-by-side with the MK in Angola and Mozambique...could be moved to El Salvador and Nicaragua in preparation for the restoration of the democratically-elected Honduran President.
If the US moved to counter these moves, it would evince clearly the need of ALBA to seek aid from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and elsewhere to construct a credible deterrant to US aggression.
Other, ALBA responses are possible to other crises:
For example the state of Israel has joined Somalia as a country that it being used as a base for piracy, as the seizure of an unarmed, inspected aid vessel headed for Gaza clearly evinced.
Might ALBA not act to seize any Israeli vessels which enter the waters of the member states?
In short: these crises offer the opportunity for the ALBA to clearly evince to the world that it is far more than yet another trade bloc: it is capable of far more than that.
