Johnny Cash is awesome. But stuff by Toby Keith and all the other pro-war assholes pisses me off. There is a song called "Ass Kickin' (Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue)" or something like that that is about killing the enemies of the U.S. mindlessly. And it's on a top-10 album, too. I hate that shit.

Yeah, "Boy Named Sue" and some other one are great pieces of work.
There's also that song, "cows with guns" about a bovine revolution. i like that, I always thought it was Johnny Cash, but it turns out it's not.
Did Johnny Cash sing "Ring of Fire" - there are some kicking reggae versions of that.

Did Johnny cash sing "Ring of Fire."?
What kind of question is that!?!? Any true human is born with the knowledge JC did Ring o' Fire. You, my friend, must be some sort of Intergalactic alien sent to this earth to spread your agenda of taking illicit substances through this "Reggae" music you so often speak of.

A boy named sue is my favorite song by Cash. Also, his version of NIN's "Hurt" is ass-kickalicious.

There's also a song by Clint Black, these are the lyrics, I'm dead serious : "Iraq, I rack em up and I roll". That is the stupidest shit I have ever heard. Also that Toby Keith one has the the line "puttin a boot in your ass the American way". On the Daily Show they had a thing making fun of all the Pro War country songs. They also were making fun of some of the pro war ones like that Beatie Boys songs. Funny shit.

The very best Johnny Cash song EVER was written by him and Bob Dylan, trust me. It's called "Wanted Man" (think it was only performed at one of the prison concerts) and is available on Kazaa.
As for the pro-war slant in country, I guess that reflects the demographics of the people who listen to it. For some reason the Dixie Chicks have taken an anti-Bush stance and gotten away with it, but most country folks just want to ride this whole patriotism thing to a new house and car.

What about Creedence Clearwater Revival?
I know there's some controversy over whether CCR was "country" or "rock", but I'd recommend "Bad Moon Rising" as an example of intelligent country- great music, singing that dares not to sound croony, and an anti-war message, depicting a post-war apocalypse in which the weather is screwed up and killing people.
And let's not forget "Fortunate Son". The idiots on "The Ed Sullivan Show" actually thought it was patriotic. The first verse is a wonderful stab at brainless American patriotism-
Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, that red, white 'n' blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief"
Ooh, they're pointin' the cannon at you
CCR was my dad's favorite band, so I'm quite familiar with them. :) What do you guys think?

Yeah, Creedence is pretty cool too...but they can't compare to Cash.
And the Dixie Chicks are pretty cool, I have to admit. Sure, their music sucks, but anyone that has the balls to say "I am ashamed GWB came from the same state I did" in front of a crowd of redneck hicks gets my respect. :P

Cash live at Folsom and San Quentin Prison are two awesome albums.

Dixie Chicks were in London when they dissed Bush I think. A lot of people in London don't have much love for the George Dubyas of this world.

Hey Comrade Gorley
I think it's interesting you give CCR so much credit seeing as how about a month ago they came out with a ultra patriotic song. I haven't heard it but on the news they were talking about it.

Hello, Barney.. err, Urban. ;)
Haven't heard about it, actually.. I didn't know they still did anything. :cheesy: But patriotic or not, they were still smart enough to realize the problems with patriotism and war (ie "Fortunate Son") and condemned the mindlessly patriotic.

patriotic or not, CCR still rocks crazy hard.

Creedence may have been patriotic but perhaps they're "good" cappies (yes, they do exist), that can be patriotic but can still not be so obsessively devoted to their country that they can't think outside the box and notice their country's (and capitalism's) problems, even if they don't renounce it.
