Hey everyone.... I have become interested in joining the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Before doing so - I was wondering if this was an organization worth joining, from a revolutionary point of view... or if it was a reactionary organization. It appears to me to be an organization worth joining, but I wanted to ask you all first.

Thanks.

In the early to mid 20th century it was a progressive organization fighting for the rights of an oppressed minority. Now, as far as I'm concerned, they are little more than reformists who support capitalism and imperialism.

Any organizations that you might recommend?

I know about half the members of my local chapter, and sat next to the Youth President in my History class for an entire year, so that's where my response is coming from.

You won't lose anything by joining, but the only thing really to be gained by being in the NAACP is more contact with the African American community and the racially aware, so there is an opportunity for the spreading of ideas. However the NAACP is an extremly liberal organization, you'd be hard pressed to find a member who hasn't fallen on the Obama train and supports the Democratic Party.

It's not nessacarily a reactionary organization, but certainly nowhere near a revolutionary organization or one who attacks true racism or any racism with a militant response. Essentially it's a liberal lobby group when you boil it down.

Uhuru Movement, check out some of the speeches by Omali Yeshitela (which I probably misspelled). There might be an APOC chapter near you, but the realm of class based political groups that are minority organizations is small.

This. You can also look into the Black Radical Congress - they've sponsored/participated in some interesting forums and talks the past few years.
