View Full Version : Political Graphic arts Showcase - Reviewing selfmade graphic works of boardmembers

Hey guys,
I thought since numberous members are starting topics to get feedback some of their (serious) political graphical work, we could keep them together in a regularly checked pinned topic. This will allow for some constructive feedback and mutual benefit in learning from each others skills/techniques/inspiration.
I've been a bit neglective as moderator of this forum the last few months so i'm trying to catch up on my responsibilities :).
I hope to see some of the regular artists posting some of their portolio here! :thumbup1:

By comparison, I made this sticker design: :p

I love the flyer you posted DR, like i said on your page, the CJB logo is fly. My only criticism would be, rather than the green at the bottom fading out, maybe have a straight edge that's slanted or have a splattered edge perhaps? Everything else in the design is quite solid, so it just seems a bit of a sore thumb to me.

Hmm.. most of my art is just absurd nonsense...
I love the absurd! And it doesn't seem like nonsense to me - money has hijacked people's being -keep it up!
I actually put one of these pics in another place, I didn't see this thread. All my work is on insectdesires.com

anarcho-juche thundercats?
I was wondering if someone was going to bring up Juche... I merely included it for the 'intelligentsia' idea,
but not much more. It was either going to be a paintbrush or a pencil. And an axe where the hammer is.
The lightning bolt arrow thinger is from the Weather Underground symbol. This picture is meant to be more
sympathetic to that line of socialist thought than anything to do with Best Korea.

I drew this after the slogan "1, 2, 3, 4 escalate the class war! 5,6, 7, 8 organized and smash the state!" got stuck in my head. Because then I imagined me as an anarchist communist cheerleader yelling that at people even though I would never be a cheerleader. Lol. Yeah, it's random. Lol.

i would only go for the flikken one, sounds way more agro than the polite "politie".
"leuven haat flikken" must be the first time i hear anything in flemmish that actually doesnt sound sweet... although that is with my internal accent, pretty sure in an actual flemmish accent it would sound all "thats so cute" again

You can go to our website to see them in all their PDF goodness (or buy a copy through MagCloud).
Also, I've done covers for books we've published. Here are a couple of those:

And, of course, one from our new Essentials series of classic communist works:

Q, those are terrible :P
If the intended meaning of showing a region is the world, then any of the following is better: A world map (without distorting sizes as much as Mercator projection), a wireframe globe without continents, the astronomical symbol (⊕).
Colour gradient does not belong on a flag.

I like designing flags. Here are a few syndicalist flag designs I made for use in a video game (HoI: Darkest Hour)
great stuff, i do some revisions of flags for victoria 2 myself..
but please, dont continue the facepalm inducing tradition of using the Partido "Socialista" emblem on the socialist/syndicalist versions of the portuguese flag XD... I suggest looking in to symbolism of the anarcho-syndicalist inspired maximalist movement of portugal (Federação Libertária Maximalista Portuguesa, FLMP), which eventually evolved into the Portuguese CP.

Or that we have self defense workshops against police, right wing extremists, and the like in public parks (national and local). Or that we belligerently wear insignia and militant clothing everyday as of a week ago. Or that most members own legal firearms. Then shouldn't we try to change that, just as we try to change their attitude about communism? Besides, if people see an organization doing something good and flying a communist flag, they'll be more likely to inquire out of curiosity.

I respect any attempt to do just that. However our organization believes education is so urgent that we don't have time to explain why "A regime, with B symbols, failed for reasons C through F". We want to focus on the failure of employment of Marxist principles. In any case we already have roughly 100 people that wear patches, bandanas, and fly flags in their place of work. That's just the city I live in, and our party has not even gone public officially yet. I call that a success.

I have to question that, I don't know enough to say on previous socialist movements but I'll get back to you when I read more into the importance of constructivism/soviet union posters and its role in the revolution.
But where would the 1960's be without the "decorations" it had, where would mass consumerism be without its "decorations"? Every movement has imagery, sound... culture.

My final for portfolio class. Bashar al-Assad as the ogre from W.H. Auden's poem "August 1968." This painting is meant to accompany a musical rendition of the poem that is in the making.
The Ogre does what ogres can,
Deeds quite impossible for Man,
But one prize is beyond his reach,
The Ogre cannot master Speech:
About a subjugated plain,
Among its desperate and slain,
The Ogre stalks with hands on hips,
While drivel gushes from his lips.

I've been bored, so I drew some stuff for possible tattoos int he future. I always like designing my own little thing instead of some clip art off the internet.
I came up with this after awhile, it's a "Tic Tac Toe" game where "Everyone wins", with the X and O in the centre meeting and forming a hammer and sickle. It's become a symbol of sorts for me:
✕ ⃝ ✕
⃝ Ⓧ ⃝
✕ ⃝ ✕
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/8505/wowzers.png
Good idea for a tattoo or no? I'm constantly tweeking designs but all of them always have a very logo sort of style to them.

Yes, I have started to regularly include the X and O symbol in many of my designs or as my personal image...
For example, I just made this image as a more simple starting tattoo idea, personally I like Anarcho and Minimal best, I'll probably get Minimal because it's simple.
http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/9761/simpler.png
Includes the 'tic-tac-toe' hammer and sickle ('Everyone Wins'), within an infinity symbol (eternal, singularity, final antithesis, etc). There's a heart on top (love, desire, passion, etc) and three random arrows on the bottom (progress, revolution, 'chaos', etc). In the two wings of the infinity symbol is a yin and yang symbol (harmony, equality, peace, etc.).
I'd like to mention (I'm sure I really don't need to) that this stuff is all public domain

This is an unusual piece. It is meant to have the appearance of a so-called 'sacred geometric' symbol known as the 'fruit of life'. I don't nessisarily believe in it but I LOVE things being symmetrical so I tried to make the symbol out of gears. Symmetry is the main reason I keep using that odd hammer and sickle X&O. I like the idea of a lot of information being extractable from the symbol, such as mathematical formulas.
This is the result:
http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/9348/holyshiy.png
Just so you know before hand, I can see every single flaw in this symbol and it frustrated me, but it's really hard to fix something and not screw up the rest.
Let's say it came to me in a daydream about a future communist community that has embraced spiritualism.

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/6200/fellow.png
It's meant to represent "Fellow Travelers", people who don't join parties or organizations but still consider themselves revolutionary leftists and declare solidarity with these comrade organizations... So it's very simple. The arrow points left. The black and red represent the obvious. The dots are from the Yin Yang symbol, representing harmony. Grey represents a colour that doesn't disturb the black and red, lol. That's a gear if you didn't know.
And here's a stencil version! Soooo much hard work put into this obviously...

I think the symbol originally comes from Michael Moorcock's "Elric" books. Although it's depicted as a malevolent symbol in the GW games, in Moorcock's stuff it had a more nuanced meaning, including a deliberate libertarian overtone. You could reasonably claim that a hammer-and-chaos is intended to represent libertarian or anarchist communism.

That's good, since that's what I am ("anarcho-communist", if it needs a title). I've been suggesting it's a reference to the chaos that would be felt by those who hold power today; the violence and seemingly nonsensical mass restructuring of the society that profits them so; something they'd title "chaos". The arrows stretching outword in all directions gives the idea of freedom of motion, or liberty, to me. So I'm glad there may be a helpful and convenient basis behind the symbol itself, despite my original intention pretty much being that I gave my own meaning to a symbol I didn't make and made it my 'own' by manipulation.

Its a populair symbol in the (crust/anarcho) punk scene, do know though there are also a few minuscule neo-nazi groups in eastern-Europe that use the chaos symbol. Not enough not to use it in a tattoo but just so you know, my bigger beef is its association with Wicca types but I'm also still thinking about getting it on my elbow.

I call this "The Dixie Soviet"
http://s28.postimg.org/688f3w7f1/dixie_soviet.jpg
I took the faux-Confederate flag (not what the actual CSA flag was), replaced two of the red sections with black (to resemble the flag of anarcho-communism/anarcho-syndicalism), and threw an old school sickle and hammer right in the middle.
Why? Two reasons:
1. This faux-Confederate flag was used by Southern left-wing groups such as the Young Patriots Organization and the SNCC in the 60s and 70s, partly as a direct reaction to the use of the flag by reactionary groups like the Klan.
2. To shit all over those neo-confederate asswipes and their precious 'heritage'. It's enjoyable to me.

I chose the more subtle approach to complement your own, as it lulls the would-be reactionary into a false sense of security, as they think,
"Therein lies the good old banner of the white Christian republic! Hallowed be thine stripes!"
But then, they gaze upon it closer, and balk in horror as they catch a glimpse of the hammer and sickle, nestled betwixt their precious stars and leering at them as a potent reminder of the revolutionary leftist movement.
"Be still my heart!" they would bellow, recoiling in horror and unsteadily gripping a chair, before promptly collapsing from the shock. Their body would take their exclamation a little too seriously, as the banner lies in wait for its next victim.
Or maybe I could make it red or something! :)
