What made Scandinavian Black Metal known worldwide was when that lunatic Varg Vikernes killed Öystein Aarseth of Mayhem and burned down a few churches. That was so "tr00" that Burzum had a breakthrough.

Besides, Varg Vikernes was the only one who was actually "evil" IRL. He also wrote an autobiographic ideological book called "Vargsmål".

Blond was the ideal hair color among Vikings and a lot of BM bands incorporate Nordic mythology into their music (such as Bathory). I don't know about Goatwhore but unfortunately there's also National Socialist black metal bands (NSBM) so it could be an Aryan thing. Luckily the Nazis are few and far between but I'm not really a huge black metal fan anyway - early Dakthrone, Limbonic Art, Emperor and a few lesser known bands mostly.

Eh, he wasn't the only one who burned down churches. Also I believe they were all quite serious in their satanic misanthopy. Varg certainly wasn't the only one with fucked up views.
For example Darkthrone's album Transilvanian Hunger had "Norsk Arisk Black Metal" written on the cover, and the band issued the statement "We would like to state that Transilvanian Hunger stands beyond any criticism. If any man should attempt to criticize this LP, he should be thoroughly patronized for his obviously Jewish behavior." Of course later they claimed to be completely apolitical but that's just bullshit.

But yeah Vikernes is the most messed up of all of them. After being allowed a short leave in 2003 he didn't return and was later arrested while driving a stolen car loaded with weapons.
According to wikipedia he's on parole now apparently.

Well, I believe Varg Vikernes was involved in that record. The ones I liked where before that (A Blaze in the Northern Sky & Under a Funeral Moon).

Both homosexual and Algarian actually. Anyway my point is that Varg isn't the rotten apple and the others were a bunch of angels. It seems to me that the racism, homophobia and deep hatred towards both jews and christians, together with the willingness to act upon these feelings was deeply ingrained in the early black metal scene.

The Vikings are often shown as big, bulging guys with long blond hair, but historical records show that the average Viking man was about 170 cm (5’7”) tall which was not especially tall for the time. Blond hair was seen as ideal in the Viking culture, and many Nordic men bleached their hair with a special soap.
