View Full Version : Why a left-wing radical like me will mourn the death a of Michael Jackson

I consider myself a left-wing radical who hates the injustice in the capitalist world.
Yet I found myself today quite upset at the death of Michael Jackson. This is bizarre for me as I hate the fact the fact that our 'celebrity-culture' mourns the death of famous people while there are so many people who live in a world of relative slavery and poverty
Yet for me, Michael Jackson was used and abused by the capitalist system. His story shows the real nature of the capitalist world we live in.
RIP Michael Jackson

This isn't a left issue.

True Killafacer this isnt a left issue, but tel100 does have a point about how he was abused by the world we live in, so inadvertantly it was due to capitalism (as a catalyst if i say so, it would be silly to say just capitalism). and indeed, he was a huge victim.

I feel more sorry for starving kids and opressed workers than some fucked up popstar. Honestly, people get treated by capitalism a hell of alot worse than this guy.
I feel sorry for him, he was obviously a bit of a case but that's about it for me.

Theres probably 1000 people more talented than michael jackson who die every day. They will never get the same amount of tears.
The only reason you care about MJ was he was in the popular press. Nobody was forcing him to remain in the limelight, he couldve quit while he was ahead many years ago and retired nicely before the ruckus about the child molestation allegations. Instead he got greedy and consumed by corporate avarice. I care more about wage slaves that have no control over their circumstances.
Fuck him, the sooner this dies down the better.

Exactly, he was in a position of privilege that the vast majority of the world do not have.
No pity.

the sooner this dies down the better. This Im totally with you on. At work to day, all there was on the radio was MJ songs all day long. I dont think i can tollerate that for another day, and am worried that this will last more than one day...

Michael Jackson was awesome. I must say I had some eye juicing at the news.
He was, however, clearly a troubled soul, and one can't imagine the kinds of pressures he had experienced his entire life.
And, US, Michael Jackson had always been one of the most private celebrities ever in comparison to his fame. The mystery that surrounded him was something that contributed to all the interest and speculation about his private life. Granted he was a weird guy, he wasn't an attention whore as a celebrity, quite the opposite.
Bullshit the only reason people care about him is because he was "in the popular press". I'm sorry but that's just a fucking ridiculous thing to say.
People care about him because he was a genius, who made incredible music that will influence people no doubt for generations to come.
Seriously, why do you always seem to talk crap?

Sure, thats why he lived in a theme park and invited large groups of kids to his house like some sort of demented Willy Wonka.
The mystery that surrounded him was something that contributed to all the interest and speculation about his private life.
I think the fact that he was still performing might have had a lot to do with it. I'm probably showing my age but i remember very well he was very much producing material when the kiddie fiddling circus originally began.
If he couldnt stand the heat, i shouldve stayed out of the proverbial kitchen to coin an old phrase. He could have retired there and then instead of coming back like a lolcow begging for moar. Its not as if he wasnt already rich enough.
Granted he was a weird guy, he wasn't an attention whore as a celebrity, quite the opposite.
I never said he was an attention whore, but he was self destructive in the way he refused to remain out of the industry and carried out living an extravagant lifestyle to boot.
If he'd backed off with a bit of grace and decorum maybe just maybe the media interest wouldnt have been a fraction of what it was.
Bullshit the only reason people care about him is because he was "in the popular press". I'm sorry but that's just a fucking ridiculous thing to say.
People care about him because he was a genius,
People care about him because he's a genius? Oh, i suppose when Einstein died there was a similar boo hooing in the media?
No, people care because they're pre conditioned to consume asinine distractions like the popular music industry and the afilliated celebrity worship that goes hand in hand with it.
who made incredible music that will influence people no doubt for generations to come.
Meh, i think he was over-rated.
Seriously, why do you always seem to talk crap?
Its not crap just because you disagree with me.

He had a lifestyle worthy of a Roman Emperor.

Agreed. He could have fed a couple of small countries with the money he had.
Where is personal responsibility in all this? There have been many poorer people who have struggled with addiction and child abuse that over came the same issues as MJ stuggled with. He chose not to. No matter what hand this world deals us, ultimately we are responsible for our own lives. He chose to do what he did. I have all the respect in the world for the dead, and I'm in no place to judge anyone, but I will never feel sorry for M. Jackson, the poor rich misunderstood pop star or respect him for that matter.
