Just test in your home . Try it apply the same quantity (you eat) in your eyes and check what happens.

surely they have to rely on it hitting them in the eyes?

But surely tear gas works because its a gas. There's no guarentee an exploding chilli would hit someone in the eye.

While capsaicin (the stuff that gives chillis their "heat") is a solid at room temperature, it can be dispersed in a tear gas-like manner by aerosolising it into little particles or droplets.

Damn. I was hoping it would explode in a vindaloo style sauce.

Bang goes my free curry.

The chilli, known as Bhut Jolokia, is said to be 1,000 times hotter than commonly used kitchen chilli.
Scientists at India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are quoted as saying the potent chilli will be used as a food additive for troops operating in cold conditions.
That is waaaaay too hot to eat.

These taste no good unless you're into extremely spicy.

Don't worry, those are perfectly delicious. I could always eat them for you.

If I can get a suitable artificial enviroment for these, I'm going to start growing, definitely.
