Title says it all. Via the International Brigades Memorial Trust I will be interviewing a veteran of the Spanish Civil War in the next month, he fought in a British International Brigade against the fascists and, unlike the 500 British volunteers who were killed in the conflict, lived to tell the tale

I can't promise anything but if anyone would like any questions asked, or messages passed on, please list them here, and I will see what I can do.

Thats cool Forward Union. I've met a bunch of them myself in Spanish Civil War memorial events, its sad that some of them passed away earlier this year. Truly inspiring people, I don't think it can be understated.

I'd be interested to know his opinion post civil war, on how the different influences of the different political ideologies involed such as Anarchism and Communism. Just to get an idea of what he thinks the consequences are.

I hope it goes well mate.

That's really exciting. If it is possible I would like to know how much contact the international brigade had with the marxists of the POUM and the Anarchists and also how they were thought of by his fellow brigade members.

Itd be interesting to know his personal thoughts on the "friction" between the Stalinists and the CNT-FAI/POUM.

Most veterans of the Spanish Civil War aren't anti-communist shitbags, so don't expect them to confirm your nonsensical anarcho-Trot narratives of the war.

lolwut
Of course!They were Anarcho-Communists...
But yeah would be interesting to hear about thoughts on marxists-leninists, and their actions and reactions at the time.

I was just interested in hearing what he experienced when he was there, I couldnt care less if its different from my view of what happened. If thats too much for you to handle, Im sorry.

[Flaming removed- RP]

Anyway, I agree with the above. I'd really be interested in knowing his views on the friction between the stalinists and the POUM/anarchist movements. Also be sure to ask if he is still a socialist.

Mindtoaster, you are verbally warned for flaming.

A great opportunity for yourself but three questions spring to my mind:

1) Is/was the veteran an actual communist or did he merely travel to Spain as an anti-fascist? If the latter, was their any political training provided and did he subsequently 'convert'?

2) To what degree was he actually aware of the politics at the time? I mean was he aware of the sectarian infighting between Communists/POUM/anarchists or was that present at all on the frontlines?

3) How much contact was there with the civilian population and does he have any judgement/comments on how political they were?

lolwut
Of course!They were Anarcho-Communists...
But yeah would be interesting to hear about thoughts on marxists-leninists, and their actions and reactions at the time.Given that the International Brigades were Communist run organisations, its unlikely that Forward Union is going to be interviewing an anarchist

Some basic questions:

1) How was he recruited to the Brigades?

2) Which Brigade did he serve in?

3) When did he arrive in Spain?

4) Where was he quartered?

5) Where was he trained?

6) What was the extent of the training?

7) What front did he fight on?

8) How long did he serve?

9) Who was his commanding officer?

10) When did he leave Spain and how was he mustered out of the Brigade?

As something of a fan of history, and an employer of oral history methodologies, I'm interested in the nuts and bolts of your proceedure. i.e. Are you archiving your interviews, what recording equipment are you using, did you go through an ethics board, etc.

Ok just briefly, I got in touch via the International Brigade Memorial Trust. They gave me a number, which links to his carer. I haven't spoken to him yet so I can't tell you "how it went" and I'm not sure what the camera equipment is exactly. There is an Anarchist in London who has some fairly good equiptment which was used to film the mayday rallys (youtube anarchist mayday rally and you'll find them)
