So if for as long as earth stands certain people are going to heaven or hell then what the fuck significance is the apocalypse? Suddenly there's the apocalypse and - just kidding - Now only a handful of you are going to heaven the rest are going to hell...

If the apocalypse was rescheduled for a Thursday instead of a Monday would some of the people that would have gone to hell die in car accidents and such and instead go to heaven?

Cliff notes: Why the sudden heaven/hell percentage change come the apocalypse?

I think the OP is talking about this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/144,000#Jehovah.27s_Witnesses). Or maybe this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapture).

It's all much of a muchness to me, really. I think there are much more "exciting (http://exitmundi.nl/exitmundi.htm)" scenarios out there.

Once the apocalypse occurs everyone will be judged and only a handful will make it to heaven.

If the apocalypse were delayed, some of those people that wouldn't make the cut, if dead, would.

How does this not amaze each and every one of you?

Basically, because the apocalypse is a silly story which has no scientific merit. Also because the idea that God bears human characteristics (such as judgment and anger) is childish and awfully self-centered. Also because the 'holy books' from which you gather your ideas are not adequate sources of information. Also because the stories you tell are totally far-fetched and unrealistic. Also... meh... in a nutshell:

I'm pointing out a hole in the bible story and the only place to get a bible story is from the bible. Sorry I had to reference from the reference.

I'm not religious. I found this to be interesting and had not heard this before. Maybe I'm the first?

It's not a hole in the bible story. There are absolutely no christians I have ever met that interpret Revelations in the way that you are here.

If you believe the Bible fully, then only Christians will be taken to heaven. However any Christians who are still alive at the coming of the apocalypse will be taken to heaven, as well as any who become christians during the apocalypse. The verses you're probably being confused by are the references to the 144,000 chosen ones from the 12 tribes of judah, but there are a variety of interpretations of that portion of verses, none of the accepted ones are that they will be the only ones who go to heaven, as a few verses later it makes mention of the "great multitude" who are also saved.

Some Christian sects even believe that the events described in the book of Revelation have already happened, or are metaphorical and do not actually believe it is a description of the apocalypse. Suffice it to say, no christians that I have ever met believe that during the apocalypse a significant number of christians will be left to go to hell simply because God is being more "selective" or something.

No.

Nominally, Christians account for almost 2 billion people, or a little under 1/3 of the world's population. If all people who consider themselves Christian (and no others) will go to heaven, then 1 in 3 people alive today will go to heaven.

Now, that's probably not really the case, because:

1. Of the 2 billion self-identified Christians, many are Christians in name only and do not really do anything religious. This would reduce the number of people going to heaven.
2. Many Christians believe that it is possible for some non-Christians to go to heaven too. This would increase the number of people going to heaven.
3. Some Christian sects believe that other Christian sects are not really Christian. This would reduce the number of people going to heaven.

So it's really impossible to even begin to estimate the number of people who will go to heaven. But, unless you wish to say that some obscure sect is the sole keeper of the true faith and the vast majority of Christians are irredeemable heretics, the population of heaven must number in the billions.
