I, personally, believe that it was a money making technique. A good way to look rebellious and to get that eager idealistic youth to buy their records. i don't think they gave a rats ass about politics or anything going on in the world. They wanted money, and thats how they chose to market their product.

Firstly, no, they werent anarchists. Rotten said -I think it was in his autobiography- "I dont know who would benifit in an actual anarchist state, but it wouldnt be the working class". By "I am an anarchist", he just meant, more or less, "Im sick of the establishment and its bullshit rules". As he himself puts it, "dont accept the old order - get RID of it".
The Pistols were fiercely political, though, to the point where several members were actualy attacked in the streets for writing "God Save The Queen". Im sure you've heard the song, but here's a link to the lyrics....

Keep in mind that at the time, bagging out royalty was something you just didnt do, so it took a shitload of balls to release a song like this, and it caused a pretty big uproar.
Having been brought up in a working class Irish household in a shabby London neighborhood and being fiercely witty and damn good with a pen, John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) was the political voice of the Sex Pistols. He had passionate views regarding the plight of the working classes and the British people in general, and had a real disdain for the establishment and for royalty. Check out his biography, Rotten: No Black, No Irish, No Dogs, its a fuckin excellent read. The Filth and The Fury also gives some light on what the Pistols had to say politically. Ive already said all this in the punk thread though :).
Incidentally, most people who were involved with the band claim the Pistols didnt make much money until after the group split up, when they went on and did their own thing. They had an absolutely useless manager, who screwed them out of their money, tried to steal credit for their ideas, and couldnt score gigs for shit. They werent corperate *****es, as I said in the other thread corperate *****es dont get fired from TWO major record labels within two years for refusing to tame themselves.

thanx a lot political suicide for your answers coz u got my same point of view, they used to be just some punks who failed in their life ,so they decided to do it trough music industry, and they used the term anarchism to attract the youth !anyway jonny rotten is not that respectable person to read his biography! i doesn't mean that because i wrote a song which say: damn american imperialism or fuck lyndon jhonson or the kremlin song , so that mean that i'm perfect and i got a lot of knoledge about politics!
but i like their music:-D
thanx!

I dunno man, I think anyones respectable enough to at least read their biography and see where they're coming from, you cant really question their motives if you havnt heard their point of view.

I completly agree with Hodgo there. Which is why i gave my personal opinion and haven't yet to counter anything he has said. i haven't read Rotten's Bio and i haven't read all of the Filth and the Fury, so at this point, he knows more then me. Its important to read things from all points of view. You can't hate something you don't understand.

You know Will Young of Pop Idol fame is actually a Marxist, he admits that he lives a capitalistic lifestyle though, I hope he's going to do something about it!
