This takes me back.
I wish that I had that kind of zeal again, to the point where I thought that I was the new Lenin, and that the inconsequential minutiae of my political musings represented the next critical stage of the world communist movement.
First came the Paris commune,
Then came the great October revolution,
After that, workers revolutions in a dozen countries,
But now all history of the worlds communist movement and the struggle of millions for emancipation will rest in the shadow of my bold,world-defining blog entry, that will shake the foundations of class society to their very rubble!
All of the high school commie trademarks are there:
1. The fundamentals of Marxism need to be changed, somehow.
Now, I recognize that yes, the theory of Marxism needs to be advanced, and applied to contemporary issues of the working class.
These kids want to completely overhaul it though, not on a basis of science and actual problems of theory and practice, but on the basis of hear-say about the USSR and a bourgie "Hot or Not" contest for various socialist persynalities.
"Marx- In."
"Lenin- ew! Out."
"Che- In!"
"Stalin- No! Out, out out!"
"Cool. From now on, we'll call ourselves Marxist-Guevarists. Hipsters of all countries, unite!"
2. All of the communists need to get together, need to unite.
In theory, this is a quaint idea. In practice, it is both un-necesary and downright counter-productive.
The Bolshevik party, the first party to lead a succesful socialist revolution (other than the Paris commune), did not unite with all of the "socialist" forces of the time.
They split with the Second International, (more or less the authority on working class struggle at the time), with the Mensheviks, etc. The bolsheviks were often involved in the same Soviets as the other Russian groups at the time (Mensheviks, Socialist-revolutionaries, Left Socialist revolutionaries, etc..), but they never ceased to criticize these bunch, and the people quickly were drawn to the politics of the bolsheviks over the capitulationism and political programs of other groups constituting the Russian socialist movement.
This culminated in a revolution in 1917.
Not only did splitting not weaken the party, it made it stronger.
If you aknowledge that there are different strands of Marxist theory, different ideological outlooks, then you must assume that there is a reason for these political differences, and the emergence of new strands of Marxist theory (excluding the mangled hipster "ism's" that are created by the clumsy mashing together of generally incompatible but trendy ideologies, occasionally with Marxism).
For my part, I allready presided over a multi-tendency "I'm okay, you're okay" political group a couple of years ago. All I can say is good luck with that, because I actually acted on the impulse to "Unite" the left, actually made it a reality in my city, and in doing so I learned why the divisions existed in the first place.
Besides, there is two major things wrong with all calls for the left to "unite":
A. It always revolves around uniting around ideology, rather than uniting
around specific,tangible political work.
B. Instead of appealing to the existing left to join forces, wouldn't it
be more pragmatic and efficient to, y'know, mobilize workers ?
3. The world communist movement up to this point didn't know what the hell they were doing.
They lacked teenage suburban wisdom to illuminate the path for them, weed out the revisionists from the real Marxists based on what they learned from a high school social studies text book, and make lazy, easy, feel-good observations like "the Left needs to join forces. We need to unite".
Fall on your knees, for you are in the presence of your prophet, o' communists. He will lead the faithful out of Egypt, if you only heed the infallible words and divine purpose of his Blog entry!
High school was fun, and this was a nostalgic way to start my morning. If you are you are interested in tangible revolutionary models and politics though, drop me a PM.
