View Full Version : The role of twitter in the uprising

Twitter is socially destructive because it justifies the fragmentation of communication with the illusion that lots of small posts together communicate a coherent and immediate knowledge map on any particular event or subject. Not necessarily that I subscribe to that idea... Personally I think it's a good means to facilitate the quick transfer of knowledge and it certainly democratises the dissemination of information. But I've got to take qualm with the 'gimmick' of twitter and the attention that it's received in the media here, rather than the situation itself, as well as how reliable the information we're getting is - with people from all polemics (pro/anti govt, reformist, revolutionary) of the situation using it as well as apparently Israeli interests, it all becomes a bit muddled.

I'm not suggesting that in the mainstream media, journalistic integrity is rigidly adhered to; but isn't it the case that we're debasing the role of the professional and identifiable journalist? What are the credentials of the person 'tweeting' that makes them a reliable source, and are we getting accurate information?

...this is all from some guy who hasn't followed the situation on twitter. I just don't 'get' it
