June 18, 2009 -- The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter-in-chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.

PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.

Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."

OH NOES HE SWATTED A FLY :crying:boo hoo hoo, the poor flies! :cursing:I hate humans! :cursing: booo hoo hoooo, we're evil and hurting thinking feeling flies!:crying::crying:

Flies are one of the few species that I would be happy to see extinct.

Flies are one of the few species that I would happy to see extinct. The problem is that they are the food of many lizards, frogs, spiders, etc. But I think there are two species we should research on to see if we could extinguish them without consequences:

Ticks. What the fuck are they good for, really? A bunch of parasites that are annoying and spread serious diseases. As far as I know no species feeds on them either.

Wasps. Yeah, I know that they pollute flowers. But there are bees that are capable of that as well, and additionally produce honey. I really hate wasps for their aggressivity and respectlessness towards larger animals (such as humans) -- they are totally different from bees and bumblebees in that regard.

Some summers when it's as worst with them wasps around here, you can't sit in peace for 5 minutes outside without at least one of them bothering you.

Edit: Vipers. Why are poisonous snakes necessary? If we could find out a way to either make them disappear or at least lose their poison that would be nice. As long as it wouldn't hurt any important chain of nutrition, of course.

Well, wasps are a good pest control to keep down the levels of smaller, more annoying and destructive insects ruining your crops.

Do you agree on ticks though?

Well although for most people its an absolute irrelevancy, I personally never like killing anything I don't have to kill. I just think its and odd thing to do, to want to kill anything.

Sentinel, I do agree with you on ticks. They seem to be quite worthless, only serving to spread disease.

Come think of it, are mozzies any service to the ecosystem?

And wasps can definitely fuck off.

The problem is that they are the food of many lizards, frogs, spiders, etc.

As are many of the species within the absolutely massive class Insecta. Very few insectivores feed exclusively on a particular species, and I can't bring to mind any species which feeds exclusively on only one species of fly, for example the housefly.

Ticks. What the fuck are they good for, really? A bunch of parasites that are annoying and spread serious diseases. As far as I know no species feeds on them either.I certainly wouldn't miss the tick. Thankfully I haven't ever been bitten by one, and I hope I never do.

Wasps. Yeah, I know that they pollute flowers. But there are bees and bumblebees that are capable of that as well, and additionally produce honey. I really hate wasps for their aggressivity and respectlessness towards larger animals (such as humans).I dunno about wasps. I suppose they're annoying in the summer, but it's not like they spread diseases. I'd be happy with a reliable bug-zapper or whatever to deal with problematic individuals.

Some summers when it's as worst with them wasps around here, you can't sit in peace for 5 minutes outside without at least one of them bothering you.I find that staying away from bins and covering anything sugary helps. The little shits are absolute devils for sugar.

As long as it wouldn't hurt any important chain of nutrition, of course.Snakes, even poisonous ones, I'm willing to tolerate because they don't go out of their way to attack humans and also feed on vermin. Same thing with spiders.

things that should go extinct are ticks and mosquito's.

ticks unfortunately are a real risk for me as i work outside i also had one a few days ago crawling over my hand while i got in the car i quickly caught it and threw it out of the car.
nasty bugs i really cant use a dose of Lyme disease.

I dont think we could make flies extinct if tried.

skeeters are annoying but I can live with them. Just put some dry ice in the corner of your yard whenever you go outside for extended periods of time. I will give you ticks though. Ticks and fleas.

Oh and killer bees. They shouldn't exist in the first place.

Flies are one of the few species that I would be happy to see extinct.

I hate flies too, but considering they're at the bottom of the food chain it would fuck up the eco system if that ever happened.

As for the original thread subject, considering flies can spread plague and all other sorts of shit, they're one of the few pests that can do as much harm to us as we can to them. So i don't have any sympathy for them.

wasps eat flies, so at least they have one redeeming trait.

Excellent. From now on, you can always ask hardcore vegetarians: "Oh, so you also think that we shouldn't swat flies, because it's murder?" And they'll just have to say: "Umm, yes."

Christ, man. Every little step we take probably crushes a few million bacteria.

ZOMG WE ALL MUST LIVE IN LITTLE PLASTIC BUBBLES SO AS TO NOT KILL ANYTHING

they're a lifeform of sorts, arent they?

Plants can also go extinct, are they also 'alive'?

As far as I'm aware viruses don't quite fit in the alive category. They fit a few of the criterias for being alive but not all.

I'm a vegan who kills insects....

The ideological purism among some of my fellow vegans does annoy me, I used to have a really horrendous roach problem and they would crawl all over my books, shitting on 'em, demolishing the theory that roaches only gather around food, no they don't. But those were the small ones. The big ones! Oh, the big ones are just a pleasure, they will actually crawl on you. Imagine being in the bathroom, looking in the mirror and watching as a HUGE roach crawls on your shoulder. UGH!!!:crying:

a cow > bugs

I know that plenty of plant foods are made with pesticides...

Insects also do not have the same kind of minds that the animals we defend do. There is even a debate over whether insects feel pain.

they're a lifeform of sorts, arent they?

Not really. Unlike bacteria the virus isn't recognised as alive. Don't ask me why, biology confuses the shit out of me.

Plants can also go extinct, are they also 'alive'?

Yes. Plants are alive, it's the basis of the [really weak] "but you kill plants too" argument against vegetarians.

Flies in Australia in summer.. damn.
On the subject though, i think it's fucking pathetic, there are hundreds of thousands of human right violations happening each day and organizations such as PETA are a mockery to human dignity, I'm not saying we shouldn't have compassion toward other animals and respect the ecosystem but this group is just a bunch of nutters..
