In my opinion the Sex Pistols were the single greatest band of all-time, and I think they had an edge on all other punk bands when it came to pashion, Johnny Rotten was a fuckin' legend. Check out Anarchy In The UK and God Save The Queen, both of which have a pretty strong anti-establishment, anti-state, anti-stupidity and anti-blind acceptance vibe to them. They were rebels long before it was cool to be, and spoke out against the monarchy in an era where to do so was consider blasphemy.

Other bands worth checking out are the Misfits, Frenzal Rhomb, The Ramones The Clash, The Stooges and Siouxie and The Banshees.

WHAT? I must admit that the Sex Pistols were the doorway that got me into listening to the punk bands that I listen today, but geez, I will also admit that they were dumbasses. Everytime I think about them nowadays, I think back to that picture of Sid Vicious where he's all junked-out with his slutty girlfriend wearing a swastika T-shirt. What message were they sending out? They were too mixed up being junkies and assholes to ever do anything that would mean a thing. I do enjoy the Misfits though....they're cool. And the Clash's self titled album is seriously great. By the way, what country are you in? Fer krists sake. Listen to the Dead Kennedys, Union 13, The Exploited and throw in some NoFX for funsies.
Those were the bands I could pull out my ass the fastest.

Carreer oportunities by the Clash

Lyrics: The offered me the office, offered me the shop
They said I'd better take anything they'd got
Do you wanna make tea at the BBC?
Do you wanna be, do you really wanna be a cop?
Career opportunities are the ones that never knock
Every job they offer you is to keep you out the dock
Career opportunity, the ones that never knock
I hate the army an' I hate the R.A.F.
I don't wanna go fighting in the tropical heat
I hate the civil service rules
And I won't open letter bombs for you
Bus driver....ambulance man....ticket inspector
They're gonna have to introduce conscription
They're gonna have to take away my prescription
If they wanna get me making toys
If they wanna get me, well, I got no choice
Careers

Ain't never gonna knock

They were too mixed up being junkies and assholes to ever do anything that would mean a thing.

I agree that Sid Vicious was a junkie and a dumb-arse. Vicious was not an important member of the Pistols though, unless you're speaking in terms of image alone. To my knowledge he only helped with writing two songs ("Bodies" and "Holiday In The Sun" ) and according to the other band members he "helped" simply by sitting in the studio looking all punk-rock. He couldnt play bass, literally, the sound crew had to turn his amp down so he couldnt be heard when they played live, and he cant even be heard in Nevermind The Bollocks, because even though he had replaced Glen Matlok on bass by this time, they actually had to get Matlok to come back and play the bass during the recording of the album. Sid was the dead wheel of the Sex Pistols, the other members werent junkies.

Johny Rotten, who wrote most of the Pistols lyrics, was a completely different breed to Vicious (especialy after Sid got into heroin). While Vicious spent most of his time wasted on heroin, Rotten was writing songs that reflected the frustration of working class youth. Fuck, he was reflecting the frustration of youth in general. The message came at a crucial time, when IRA bombs, garbage strikes, unemployment, riots and school drop-outs were a daily reality, and really, whats changed? Id would argue that their message is just as relevent today as it was when the songs were written. What message did they send out? Hopefully the lyrics speak for themselves:

God save the queen
Her fascist regime
Has made you a moron
Potential H-bomb

God save the queen
She aint no human being
There is no future
In England's dreaming

Don't let them tell you, do what you want
And don't let them tell you, do what you need
There's no future no future
No future for you

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
'Cos tourists are money
Our figures head
Is not what she seems

Oh god save history
God save your mad parade
Oh lord god have mercy
All crimes are paid

When there's no future
How can there be sin
We're the flowers in the dustbin
We're the poison in your human machine
We're the future you're future

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
We mean it man
And there is no future
In England's dreaming

No future, no future, no future for you
No future, no future, no future for me- God Save The Queen

Id interprate this as a song against the blind worship of royalty. In his autobiography, No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs -which I highly recommend if you want to get an idea of where the Pistols were coming from- John Lydon, or Johnny Rotten as he was known during the days of the Sex Pistols, expressed his discontent at how Britain still worships a royal family, even though they've got no qualifications to rule the people except for the fact that their murderous ancestores saw fit to go on bloody rampages and seize power. Maybe the only reason this songs relevent to me because Im an Australian, and my ancestores who lived in slums were forced to steal food to survive, then were dragged halfway across the world on leaky ships to a strange country with a much higher climate, and forced to work seven years hard labour for the Queen and for the system that put them in the position where they needed to steal in the first place, with most of their mates dying either from malnourishment on the ships or from exhaustion. Or the fact that, under the queen, the indigenous were slaughtered en masse upon European arrival, and to appease Britain our government literally stole indigenous and "half-cast" children from their parents up until only thirty years ago. Or the fact that in world war one, in the name of the Queen. Or the fact that when the minors in Ballarat rebelled against the redcoats who demanded daily license checks and unjust mining fees -and tied them to oak-trees or put them in lock-up if they refused, or were unable, to pay them- the redcoats not only crushed the outnumbered rebels, but also led a massacre on the mining site, slaughtering minors and the minors families regardless of whether they were part of the rebellion or not. Obviously the songs more about the mistreatment of the British working class and the way monarchism is shoved down people throats, but it applies to victims of the many atrocities that have been commited in the name of the crown.

And sir and friends are crucified
A day they wished that we had died
We are an addition
We are ruled by NONE
Never, ever, EVER

And you thought that we were faking
That we were all just money making
You do not believe we're for real
Or you would lose your cheap appeal?

Don't judge a book just by the cover
Unless you cover just another
And blind acceptance is a sign
Of stupid fools who stand in line- EMI

On the surface they wrote the song after being sacked by EMI, for their rowdy behavior and their refusal to tone down their "confrontational" lyrics. "We are ruled by none", "blind acceptance is a sign of stupid fools who stand in line", its all about refusing to cow-tow and compromise your behaviour and your principals.

Now I wanna know know know know
I wanna know why you never
Look me in the face
Broke a confidence just to please
Your ego should've realised
You know what I know

You're in suspension
You're a liar- Liar

This is a song about then prime minister Harold Wilson. Being a punk band and having a potent political message was not something unique to the Clash, the Pistols were just as active in a more snide and sarcastic sense, and in my opinion were alot more powerful. For a better idea of where the Pistols were coming from Id recommend the Julian Temple film "The Filth And The Fury", in fact even if you're completely uninterested in the Pistols its worth watching as it gives a pretty interesting insight on 70s London and the social conditions surrounding the punk rock explosion.

I do enjoy the Misfits though....they're cool. And the Clash's self titled album is seriously great. By the way, what country are you in? Fer krists sake.

I dont see why it should matter, but as I said, Im in Australia. That doesnt mean Im less endorsed in music, especialy punk, since theres a very active hardcore punk scene down here, and has been for quite some time.

Sid Vicious is God, and he wrote "Belsen was a Gas" :)

I know he couldn't play an instrument or anything, but the dude was hardcore! I read his autobiography and that man truly amazes me in many respects.

The Sex Pistols couldn't play. I get sick of them after a few songs, despite the lyrics.

You said the sex pistols were rebels before it was cool, thats incorrect. The sex pistols were rebels BECAUSE it was cool, and it made them money - nothing else. I like there music, don't get me wrong. But don't put them on a pedestal as being these all-mighty rebels, because they weren't. They wanted money and fame - thats what they got. Well, Sid got death - a bit early.

Where do you live? There's a punk scene in almost every country. You're the only one who listens to punk music, but you want us to tell you bands and songs to listen to? I highly doubt you're the only punk there, I'm sure there are some out there you can grab out.

What type of punk do you listen to?

Sid Vicious was hardcore as fuck, and he was part of the big 'image' of the Pistols. Sex Pistols sold out, not that I give a shit, but they are back recording old shit just for the profit. They're back together to make more money, nothing else.

Hmm, what money? When you check out the history of the band, the members and most of the people connected with them claim they made hardly any while the band was together. Its well known that their manager, Malcolm Maclaren, was a shafty little prick who swindled them out of alot of their entitlements as well as trying to take credit for Rottens ideas. Once again, for an idea of the Pistols history check out Rottens autobiography or the Julian Temple film The Filth and The Fury, which both give a pretty good insight into how they lived fairly poorly while the band was together. Obviously you cant believe everything you read or see, but the doco and book show that according to the band and people who knew them, they werent making much until after the Pistols were finished, when they all went and did their own thing. Rottens probably doing alright financialy now with Public Image Ltd. Im not putting them on a pedestal though, nobody belongs on a pedastal, I just think they were a kickass band with a great message and a refreshing attitude.

Rasta, its true to an extent that they couldnt play. The thing is they went for passion rather then precision, I mean some people look at an abstract painting and say that the artist "cant draw", sometimes the points about the emotion or message behind the work, not the technical skill or precision with which its presented.

Junichi, its true that its become all about the money these days, which is sad, especialy considering that two major labels sacked them, and several furious conservatives and monarchists sacked them, for their refusal to change their attitude and their music. Ah well, at leat they admitt it I guess, not like the Rolling Stones and Metallica who still want people to think they're doing it for the love of it. In my opinion they only love it coz its making them millions of dollars.

I agree that Vicious was hardcore as fuck and I think he was cool, but he was no doubt a dumbass. The road he took was one reserved for the stupid or the suicidal.

I didnt know he wrote Belsen Was A Gas, I thought that would have probably been Mclaren and/or Ronnie Biggs, since Vicious was well and truly out of it when they recorded this. If its true then thats a little disapointing, I dont think many things are beyond having the piss taken out of them, but in my opinion the holocaust is way beyond it.

How anyone can write as song talking about the slaugher of millions of innocent people in a way thats supposed to be humerous is beyond me. The song was written after Rotten left the banned, at which time the Pistols ceased being socially conscious and started just being offensive for the sheer hell of it, however their association with a guy like Biggs is a shitstain on their legacy, even if they were desperate for headlines.

He did butcher the words to Frank Sinatras "My Way" when he did a kickass cover of the song though, and some of the reworded verses are quite hilarious IMO: "knocked out in bed last night, I've had my fill, my share of looting, and now the tears subside I find it oh so amusing, to think I killed a cat".... Like I said, he was cool, just stupid.

Well, I've just got an old Bad Religion cd, that I had been looking for for years. It's called 80-85, and it's not easy to get a hold of here in Norway.. It's definatly my favorite Bad Religion cd, of the three B.R. cd's I've got...

I also listen to a bit of Mad Caddies(All American Badass is a funky song :P ), and I usually listen to black metal at school, and some old Metallica songs whenever I'm in the mood...
I also listen to Prince, something you can blame Apocalypse When for....

Most of the punk-friends I've got listen to Rancid mostly, some of my hippie-friends listen to The White Stripes, and Jefferson Airplane(best song ; Summer of Love :D ), and some dope-addict-friends I've got listen to Metallica and Iron Maiden, and my goth friends listen mainly to Marilyn Manson...

I like your list, with the exception of the exploited, they always struck me as kind of right wing. Oh and pennywise, they had that song "fuck authority" and then they requested that it not be played on the radio after September 11th. Oh and if you like flogging molly , you should really checkout Blood or Whiskey.
