I'd like to know your feelings about this "president". For me, and I'm in the right place to know it, he's more a character than a real president.
I can't say that in France we live in a dictatorship, but when the power is given to people just because they are friends of the president, when police is just a racist milice, when the spokesman of the president demands to boycott an independants periodic because he doesn't like it, when the other media are just instruments of the power... fuck, then we have to resist.

I think he is just a neo-liberal and a racist (if a somewhat closeted one.) Good luck smashing the 5th Republic, comrade!

My understanding (I'm more than willing to be corrected because I wasn't especially paying attention at the time for reasons I don't want to get into) was that Sarkozy effectively won the election by taking Le Pen's votes in the run-off, by playing a straight up racist campaign against African immigrants, particularly in the south. In a weird way though I think the EU presidency has moderated him a bit.

Well, he's finally aclimatizing to the French political milieu. I mean, at the very beginning he promised far to many and drastic reforms ("ruptures"); but he could accomplish all of them, especially not in a short period of time. His popularity went down while that of others like the communist Besancenot went up. But when the crisis started to hit the French economy he showed he was capable to stay firm. I think the Euro elections were a succes for Sarkozy.

Of course he is a neoliberal douche, but he might finally be proving that he can become a 'promising' leading agent of French capitalism.

My impression of "Sarko" is that he's suffering from an inferiority complex and feels like Napoleon and King Louis XIV in one person. The only things I heard about him in the news are his relationship and marriage to Carla Bruni, after he had a relation with the minister of justice, that he insulted an old peasant, his great egomania when he thinks he's the only one who can start and lead peace talks and solve the Europan financial crisis, his rigorous acting against protestors and that police and prisons are becoming more and more fascist like under his leadership.

So shortly I would say: a megalomaniac with an inferiority complex and racist- and authoritarian tendencies.
