View Full Version : Would wearing this this be considered misogynistic?

Need some feed back from the ladies/revolutionary dudes here.
I have a morbid sense of humor and am interested in the darker side of life. Part of this sort of mindset leads me to collect t-shirts of various infamous characters throughout history: Elizabeth Bathory, Vlad "the Impaler: Dracula, Anton LaVey, and Ivan the Terrible are some of my favorites in my closet.
Recently, I acquired an absolutely beautiful new t-shirt (http://www.sighco.com/Jack-the-Ripper-p-169.html) sporting the visage of none other than that saucy old fiend of Victorian-era Whitechapel, Jack the Ripper, emblazoned in front of the text from his infamous "From Hell" letter. I absolutely love wearing it and I get a lot of great comments.
However, recently, I received a criticism from two fellow Communists, saying that the t-shirt glorifies and romanticizes the savage murder of innocent women who were forced into prostitution by a society that threw working-class women away. They said that such a shirt was absolutely vile and that a Communist who is serious about the emancipation of women should never wear such things.
I see their point to an extent; indeed, ol' Jacky-boy was quite "down on whores and I shant quit ripping them till I do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. ha. ha." (as he said himself in the first "Dear Boss" letter). Although we don't know who he was, it's quite obvious that the Ripper hated, feared, and resented women and the power of their sexuality, and thus killed them in order to reassert the dominance and power that he felt that he lacked despite being a man.
What do y'all think? Is weaing this gothasfuck t-shirt a clever statement about the brutal nature of Victorian society and the mysterious fear that permeates patriarchal society, or is my wearing such a shirt a romanticization of misogyny and brutal violence against women?

It's definitely not that, but it's totally harmless. You're obviously not sincerely glorifying the actions of Jack the Ripper, (especially since you have a collection of T-shirts featuring gruesome historical figures, male and female, it's obviously just an eccentric hobby) so I don't see how anyone could take offense other than humorless PC activist-bureaucrats. I find the shirt tasteless, but If I were your comrade I would probably have just mocked your bad taste in a playful, joking manner, rather than give you a self-righteous lecture about what you should and should not wear.

Depends, I suppose, on who's standing in front of it.

Yeah, I hear that shit... then again, these 2 comrades just recently left the RCP (just like I did a year and a half ago) so they're still somewhat hanging on to some of their more puritanical politics... but I can get them to break with that childish bullshit if you only wate a whil longer. ha ha I love my work an I shant stop until I get buckled and even then watch out for your old pal Jacky.

It's actually kind of laughable that you'd be self conscious about wearing a tshirt of a serial killer because he was also a sexist.
No offense, but people who think murder and death, period, are cool (call it whatever you will, 'morbid sense of humour' only sounds cleverer) are just kind of lame, in my opinion. Seriously, no offense. I just don't see why anybody would want to wear a t-shirt with such a prick on it, unless they just enjoyed the 'shocking' image it gave them. Sort of like the occasional Hitler worshipping goths you see now and then.

Quite bizzare, definitely nothing I would ever wear... and besides: the Poe, the "Mask of the Red Death" or one of the Cthulhu shirts would have been neutral but still pretty cool. ;)

He also wears an Elizabeth Bathory shirt but his revolutionary friends are fine with that one because Elizabeth wasn't sexist:laugh:
It's a weird shirt to wear (but wear it if you like), but I have to say your friends seem a bit off if they determine whether it's acceptable to display a serial killer on your shirt based on whether they're sexist or not.

Where whatever clothes you want, fuck what anyone else says. Your putting too much thought into something that's essentially your choice alone.

Well, actually (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_B%C3%A1thory#Accusations)...
I hardly think 'Ivan the terrible' and 'Vlad the Impaler' were exactly 'friends of the working class', either.

The people who glamorize criminal types obviously haven't had to deal with them. If they had, they'd be singing a different tune.
That said, I still don't get why Hitler paraphernalia will get you branded a psycho freak while promotions of serial killers gets passed off as "a morbid sense of humor."

Evil is intriguing and even appealing in the right light. I envy people who simply see evil and are disgusted by all it represents. Some of us have rather evil inclinations we simply keep in check through rationality and conscience.

Why the sarcasm?
I think its creepy. I think you're being creepy, in that you sufficiently relish in being creepy to create this thread to draw attention to your creepy nature.
Lets look at what actually happened. You were being creepy in that way were (not to be awful but mostly teenagers) get a kick out of people being concerned for them. Suprize suprize, some commies got concerned about you. Given that they *know* that its politically wrong to say "i think you should stop being such a fucking creep and grow up" they articulated their concern by drawing attention to the misogynism that the shirt refers to.
Now, instead of explaining it to them, of saying 'oh i'm sorry i didn't mean to offend you i wont wear it anymore', instead of ignoring them and not making a big deal about it, you decided to draw *EVEN MORE ATTENTION* to yourself by getting a bunch of strangers to discuss it and offer opinions about oh how so interesting creepy and concerning you are, all the while playing the victim and acting indignant about your treatment (kind of like the BDSM submissives who pretend to be 'resisting' lol).
So, I hope you enjoy your creepy self-fashioning but this has nothing to do with politics or discrimination.

Why the sarcasm?
Because I think you are a moron and your views are moronic. I disagree with you in every concievable way and, when our consciousnesses evolve to a point where we can concieve new levels of disagreement I will be there disagreeing on those new levels too.
That is why the sarcasm.

Whether or not I agree with your taste here is irrelevant (as your shirts do not involve 'Twilight' or false metal), and your taste in shirts does not imply either positive or negative personality traits. Well, except perhaps the LaVey one, which does suggest that your interest in this dark side of life is somewhat superficial. Otherwise, as far as I can see, you're not a misogynist, and the shirt isn't misogynistic. Some people could consider it misogynistic, but some people could consider lots of things. So, basically, wear it if you desire to do so.
