the idea of this thread strongly appeals to me

Of Montreal is probably an indie classic, I've never heard of Dispatch though. do you recommend any album in particular?

Also, has anyone heard of the underground anarchist black metal subgenre? It's got a lot of influence from crust punk which is probably where the political direction derives from. It's really great, I especially recommend Panopticon to anyone even remotely into heavy music. I'd post the myspace, but I'm not allowed to post links until i have 25 posts.

I'd highly suggest Panopticon aswell!
Politics aside, still absolutely awesome, and original black metal.

I don't know if any of this is really "lesser-known" music coz I don't know what the kids are into these days. I'm old now

Of Montreal is great and I never thought they'd be around this long or sound like they do now when I first heard them. You may know their former label-mates: Neutral Milk Hotel...

Does Throbbing Gristle count as 'lesser-known'?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8klW9trVTQ

Honestly, I don't think 'lesser-known' narrows things down too much. My friends are unfamiliar with pretty much all of the stuff I really enjoy listening to.

I'm not even familiar with who does this song (I assume that when the group description says 'Los Incas' it means a group called 'Los Incas' and not the Inca people themselves) but I love it.

The moment people start talking about 'lesser known' anything, it becomes a contest to discover who can expound the usually non-existant merits of the most esoteric things in that category. It strikes me, and I guess I'm guilty of it my self on occassion, that people confuse indulgence in the obscure with sophistication.

I don't see how that would even be possible when its about music (or art or favorite food or something similarly subjective). As it relates to individual taste, sophistication in this regard seems to be a completely relative matter of opinion

I'm very into Croatian Post-Pop revival music recently, however, it is far too complex for most listeners immature ears. You know, I was actually the first person to ever hear Imogen Heap?

Isn' t the whole point of this thread for people to introduce eachother to new music? You may be suprised to find people that like the same music as you. Imogen Heap is good...how do you know you were the first to hear them though? That seems like it would be difficult to prove.

This is a song by the band La Mancha de Rolando, about how the loved ones of the 30,000 disappeared spent the the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and the subsequent celebrations. Nice song and nice lyrics, pretty sad. I always thought the song was just about football, I found out the real meaning yesterday:

SgNocPv7ZAg

Lyrics in English:

Your team won again,
they lit a thousand flares today,
they call your name and you see,
how the stand is about to surge

But your star isn't here any more,
the morning took her away...

The city burns bright, but in your grey eyes it rains
the people celebrate and laugh once again,
but this carnival, which today won't let you sleep,
wherever you look she will be there

Life is always like that,
it gives and takes away for nothing
even though you are alone, without heart
now you have to go through the motions

And the scene is a party,
where the fans have gathered

The city burns bright, but in your grey eyes it rains
the people celebrate and laugh once again,
but this carnival, which today won't let you sleep,
wherever you look she will be there

Repeat x2

Surely if you can find their music on YouTube they are too well known by the standards of the indie pricks this thread appeals to by its nature.

"Lesser known" as a descriptor is fucking stupid anyway. People who have no interest in industrial music may have no idea who Skinny Puppy, KMFDM or Die Krupps are, whereas someone who does might well consider them incredibly mainstream. Because of this surely what music is least known about basically comes down to what genre is least listened to?

This is why I asked way back in this thread what exactly qualifies as lesser known? Most of my mates haven't heard of half the music I listen to but some of it is in the charts in other countries - they are relatively unknown in the coastal backwater I live in but that doesn't mean shit.

don't be so stuck up. i'd classify lesser known music as shit that doesn't make the top 40 charts. i would NOT classify lesser known music as some touring band that doesn't have a label yet. or they might be, but then again you can't blame someone for not spending enough meaningless time online or going to local basement shows.

Onto what? I've got nothing wrong with listening to "obscure" music, almost all of the music I listen to could be considered obscure by a lot of people, Jazzratt is mostly referring to the attitudes of many of the people that listen to "obscure" music. There's nothing wrong with trying to find unknown bands, but don't get all fucking pretentious about it, which a lot of indie kids do.

P.S. For what it's worth, I've heard of almost all of the bands listed in this thread, and it's not because I'm some kind of musicologist, but because all the WASPy kids in my town listen to bands like MGMT and State Radio.

Danny Gatton was pretty well known to fans of guitar oriented music but for most of his career, he was called "The World's Greatest Unknown Guitar Player" by the music press.

The guy could flat out play. Unfortunately, he committed suicide but he did leave behind several albums that are worth checking out. The 88 Elmira Street album is a good place to start for anyone that might be interested.

Elmira St.was nominated for a Grammy but it was the same year Eric Johnson released Ah Via Musicom, which won the award.

SPK

Inspired by The Socialists Patients' Collective (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_Patients_Collective)

Very old industrial/noise/avant-garde band, if you like throbbing gristle, you'll probably make these your new favourites. (At least that's what happened to me.)

Profile taken from discogs.com

"The project ideal is to express the content of various psycho-pathalogical conditions, especially schizophrenia, manic - depressive psychosis, mental retardation and paranoia. Information Overload supersedes normal, rational thought structures, forcing deviation into less restrictive mental procedures of so-called 'mental illness'. SPK is trying to be a voice for those individuals condemned to the slow decay of mental hospitals and chemical / electro / surgical therapy, without fetishising them into blatant entertainment product. 'SONIC FOR MANICS' aims to be a vehicle for sharing mental experiences through sound."

Just go on youtube and type SPK (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=spk&search_type=&aq=f), you'll find more!

IMPORTANT: SPK STOPPED EXISTING WHEN METAL DANCE WAS RELEASED, ONE OF THE MEMBERS TOOK OVER BY HIMSELF AFTER THE BAND STOPPED. HE STARTED DOING CHEESY DISCO MUSIC, REMIXING ALSO TRACKS OF JENNIFER LOPEZ UNDER THE SAME BAND NAME. SHAMEFUL!!

I'd link some stuff from Youtube, but I don't have enough posts for it. I guess most of what I listen to is lesser known if you're using television or the average US radio station for a scale. Some of my favourites are Efterklang (someone from Denmark would probably argue that they aren't obscure), Rachel's, Piano Magic (despite the awful name, they're great. I think they might also be more popular in the UK than the US), Joe Volk (if you like Sufjan Stevens, you'd probably like him too), Worrytrain (I really recommend his work if you like apocalyptic neo-classical electronic fusions), and Sylvain Chauveau (more neo-classical). Xiu Xiu are pretty popular I think, but they're another of my favourites.

I don't know how well know these bands are in the UK or Europe, but here they are unheard of.
