Moviment Graffiti is holding a peaceful walk against racism and violence in the streets of Paceville on Saturday following the death of Suleiman Ismail Abubaker, a Sudanese migrant.
28-year-old Suleiman Ismail Abubaker, resident in Gozo, died in hospital on Tuesday after being punched in the head by a bouncer outside a club in Paceville on Friday night.
Moviment Graffitti states: "We are convinced that this first death in our country caused by racism cannot be left unnoticed.”
Duncan Deguara, 29, stands accused of seriously injuring Ismail Abubaker but now new charges are expected to be pressed after the Sudanese man died in hospital.
Maxim Gault and Clement Majon, the two French students who were with Ismail Abubaker, testified in court that the Sudanese migrant sustained a punch in the head after he tried to enter the establishment drunk.
Ismail Abubaker suffered broken ribs and was hospitalised to Mater Dei hospital. He died on Tuesday.
Moviment Graffitti states: “This incident happened in Paceville, where racism has been the order of the day for years. Memebers of Moviment Graffitti have for long thought that it was only a matter of time before a tragic death like this happened.”
“Coloured persons in Paceville face a lot of hostility, especially from club bouncers. Apart from the fact that the majority of clubs do not let black persons in, often-coloured persons also risk violent aggression because of their skin colour. We are also shocked that allegedly Suleiman was even kicked by passers by while lying on the ground."
Moviment Graffitti states also: "The aim of this walk in Paceville is to show that we cannot continue to accept this situation.”
“Our point is not to accuse the Maltese people of being racist, but to say that there are realities of racism that cannot be ignored. We urge all those who have values of justice and humanity at heart to join us at 1900hrs at Baystreet, this Saturday 13th June. We will walk peacefully through the streets of Paceville. People are invited to bring candles with them."
