Even if you don't like Mos Def...just listen to it...I know alot of people here abhore rap..but while this is made by a rapper...it isn't really rapping..it's like spoken word only more melodic
The reason I say this is because it's such a passionate song...I mean just read this lyric.
"Sometimes I get discouraged
I look around and, things are so weak
People are so weak
Sometimes,
Sometimes I feel like crying
Sometimes my heart gets heavy
Sometimes I just want to leave and fly away [fly fly fly, like a dove]
Sometimes I don't know what to do with myself [ow!]
Passion takes over me
I feel like a man
Going insane
Losing my brain
Trying to maintain"
now I know alot of people here feel like this sometimes
just looking around and seeing how weak our society has become...how weak people have become...and it just gets you down.
Now there is a part in the song where he says
"I want black people to be free, to be free, to be free
All my people to be free, to be free, to be free
Oh black people to be free, to be free, to be free
Oh black people to be free, to be free, to be free"
and I understand alot of people here are anti nationalist
but It doesn't just apply to black people....take black people to mean teh opressed of the world
mainly becausealot of teh video 9which is about 3 years old) takes place in africa..some times in cuba
and africa is a pretty poor place so I think if you put it into perspctive it wont jsut apply to black people
so anyway I just ask everyone who hasn't heard the song to download it and just et it flow through you..try and feel teh song

I love that song. Great tune, great album. The whole album is superb, I think I prefer some of the other stuff to "Umi Says" but it's still a classic tune.
I like that other one "May/December" (I can't remeber if that's the right name. Is it?
I also strongly urge everyone to download this song!

Ms. Fat Booty was cool.
Did you like "Rock and Roll" (I'm not sure if that was the name, but you'll knoww which I mean). I didn't think it was all that good. Pretty shit.
Slow Down and the one with DJ Premier (Mathmatics?)were great.

It was in a nike ad. When I saw that, it saddened me deeply. I mean...Mos selling out. What next?

I don't nessacarily think Mos Sold out...
I mean look at all the old songs that are turning into car commercials
you gotta make money man.

What kind of car does mos have? Wasn't it him that was the politically conscious, morally correct rapper rhyming about the concept of money is bad and we should all be equal? He sold out.

I think that people change when they get money. I'm sure Mos spends more now on a pair of shoes then he would before. Not everyone is completely dedicated. A lot of very good people look after themselves first, to a certain extent. It's the effect capitlaism has.
For example, I know a doctor, he told me he sometimes put ups his prices when he sees how much people spend on things. He showed me a cup, which was selling for around 19 Euros, as an example. If people are willing to spend money on total crap, you might as well get something for yourself.
I know he wouldn't rip people off, and he'd probably help people out, but if people can afford it...I don't neccessarily agree fully.
Of course there's also the fact that prices rise and so does your tax.
Anyway, Mos has got a job, the same as everyone else. If he spent money on a comfortable chair or a "nice" watch, he's got to make it back somehow. I don't think he sold out to bad. Fair enough, I haven't seen the ad or even heard that much about him over the past two-ish years....
He also runs/owns a bookstore in Brooklyn(?) with Talib Kweli, so he does put something back. He's providing an education for people, goddamnit! Lefty, I'm going to kick your ass!

I think Mos was more about restoring black pride and culture and hip hop as opposed to socialism...I know he's a leftist but not as far as us. I sitll like the guy though
Actually that's kweli's bookstore
but he does give back through helping out young poets and actors...much like the roots do with music
The Roots produce lots of young musicians at their club called Black Lily in philly
and Mos helps out young poets and actors

Yeah, I agree totally. I've got a lot of respect for Mos Def; I think what he is doing is just as important as what any of us strive to do. Every little helps, you've just got to do the best you can at doing the best you can (and he does it pretty damn good, let's face it  ).
Actually that's kweli's bookstore
Whoops
I wasn't too sure.,I actually thought that they owned it together. I seem to remember a photo of them there on the cover of the Black Star EP, or a photo in an interview. Perhaps that's what I'm thinking of. Regardless, I'm sure he does do shit for the community and what not. He seems like the type.

Love Mos Def. "Umi Says" is great. Also "Travelling Man" (Leaving on a Jet Plane).
"Climb" and "New World Water" are awesome.

See, I'm not the only one that thinks Travelling Man is great. I've been trying to find the remix to that song for years with no luck, and the remix isn't even hip hop. I don't know who's responsible for the remix, but the music video had a skateboarder and a japanese guy as well as other people carrying this oldskool looking boombox around. If anyone knows where I can get the song, or more importantly the video, hit me up. Peace.

It is a great song. You can get it on DJ Honda's album, "HII". Honda produced it, so I presume he's the Japanese guy in the video.
I don't know about the video, I'm afraid.
Actually reading your post again, I'm confused. I am only aware of one version of Travelling Man. That was produced by Honda. It's not on either "Black on both Sides" or the "Black Star EP" so I don't know.
