View Full Version : Anarchism on tv in the US

So I was watching television today, and of course it being the US, I was surprised come a cross a segment all about anarchism on a station called Current. It's kind of like a semi-independent journalist station, and it's owned by Al Gore (hence why I said semi independent); nonetheless this is the first time I've ever seen anarchism portrayed on american tv as something different than hooligan teenagers breaking stuff (even if you need digital cable to watch the channel).

Thoughts? I thought it was cool.

I have noticed that centrist and left bourgeoisie political forces tend to woo radical leftists (at least in my country) when it is suiting their agenda. That is why Al Gore's tv channel is reporting on these sympathetic anarchists. I think that "progressive" bourgeoisie structures want to have contact with youth like that for recruiting them later, as academicians, reporters or news hosts. When they have "mildened" their views of course.

Perhaps your right, but it still showed that anarchists aren't a bunch of dumb kids. Since you don't live in the US, I guess you don't understand what it's like to see a tv station even give an anarchist a fair chance to speak.
That's actually a couple of months old (I've seen it on Youtube before), Current tends to repeat things every couple of months (they do it more with things concerning sweatshops).

The media - liberal and conservative - will always try to use us, we just have to be aware of that and try to use them.
I think it's good when Republicans who are hated by most people (warn of Socialism - it's like when the cops that harrass high school kids after school come into school and give a presentation about not doing drugs... it's practically an advertisement to do drugs). Similarly if anarchists are shown as fighters against injustice, it's all good publicity for the left.

its funny that the man who is so "like, into anarchism, " talks about organizing. By definition, is not that hypocritical that you want to organize to disorganize? And what about the pepsi bottle in his pocket? he could have stood by his values and not participate in capitalism. These people need to focus on helping others, not promoting a book about making bombs, like the anarchist cookbook. Whiny suburban kids who were handed too much, ship them to any other country, and you dont have time for such silly ventures. And he would probably lose all that fat. Oh wait, hes prob on his way for a big mac. fuckin hypocrites...
Its like every strawman I've ever heard crammed into one paragraph.

Ha. I know most of those kids. That clip was made by current? I always assumed they made it about themselves and then it was shown by current?! I guess they are not that pompous.

I haven't watched the clip, but from what I know of Current nearly all of their material is produced by amateurs who submit their content to Current to be aired.

Someone needs to register there and shoot down all of those comments.
I was not aware that anarchism was not buying pepsi or mcdonalds (personally I like both), nor was I aware that there is a gene that makes us create hierarchical relationships.
nor was I aware that there is a gene that makes us create hierarchical relationships.
It's right between the gene that makes us greedy and the gene that makes us fight wars.

Yes. I guess its pretty different to Sweden. Here, radical leftists could become respected cultural personalities. If they aren't too radical.

If they aren't too radical, what makes them anarchists?

Strange...how the hell does this work?

Well, they are self proclaimed anarchists I guess, but don't really know anything about revolution or stuff like that? I guess?
Kind of like how the CPUSA are "communists" but in reality they are idiots and push borderline reactionary politics, and in some cases support Obama.

I cant really think of any Swedish anarchists that are respected cultural personalities, but theres quite a lot of syndicalists and communists, many of them are some of the most famous writers or somesuch of today in Sweden. Itll also actually be quite hard to not find a few that hasnt at some point contributed to the revolutionary left in some way, in the form of articles in either the syndicalist, anarchist or communist press. If the names Jan Guillou, Henning Mankell or Stig Dagerman say anything to you, the two first were communists and the last one was a syndicalist.
Why this is, Ill let someone else answer, Im too tired to do that now.
