By canceling it, you can't vote anymore, get no state pension, no health services, etc (if they apply anyway). So besides the initial thrill of being "cool" (somehow) to have canceled it, it'll bite you in the long run.

I plan on emigrating out of the United States, and research shows me that you can indeed.

I'm pretty sure all you have to do is go to an embassy of a country ( Or the country itself, and after working out the payments and document work ) and simply sign a paper formerly renouncing citizenship of your country and adoption of a new one.

It may differ from country to country, but for the majority I believe that's it.

yes, though it depends what country you're from (Israel make it ridiculously difficult to do and I think some countries outright won't let you, you just get some quasi duel citizenship thing). For most, if not all countries you cannot physically renounce citizenship whilst still in that country and I'm pretty sure most require you to have accepted or be about to accept a new one (if you don't then you're going to come into trouble with the immigration of whatever country you're in anyway and unless you enjoy being locked up in an immigration camp majig I wouldn't advise it)

Why would you want to cancel your citizenship?

What could you possibly gain out of that? Even if I wanted to move out of the country, I would still try to keep dual citizenship if possible.

You could send a message to the government voluntarily revoking it of course, but that would mean that you have no right to exist in that country in their eyes. Theres no mission of them deleting their records of you, if anything they'll focus harder. En masse, this would be an interesting thing to see as a form of protest.

Pointless, Nietzsche did it, so that proves its probably a bad idea.

You would need citizenship of another country to do it, because of international law regarding statelessness.

Anyone who thinks they would like to render themselves in such a position incidentally might want to look at the plight of real stateless people before they make such ignorant comments regarding it.

Funny

I don't see the point of it unless you get millions of people to revoke their citizenship.

That would be awesome with a capital a. Imagine if half a nation would renounce their citizenships! What would they be considered? Immigrants? I would love to do that simply to see what happens afterwards. The ruling class would fucking piss their pants trying to decide their action.

No, they wouldn't. They would designate them stateless, meaning that their situation would simply become an inferior version of what they already have.

Indeed, more likely still, they simply wouldn't recognise the citizenship as being revoked and would continue to treat them as citizens.

Again though, I don't know why, other than naivety, people thinking getting rid of your citizenship (without gaining new citizenship) would be good. All it will render you is loss of the right to vote and inability to get a passport or obtain consular assistance if you get into trouble abroad.

You'd still have to pay taxes.

That would be awesome with a capital a. Imagine if half a nation would renounce their citizenships! What would they be considered? Immigrants?I wish it was that simple. Nation states cannot allow things like this to happen, they require that everyone recognises them as the sole legitimate authority within the territory they claim. If a mass movement was to renounce their citizenship without leaving the territory they better be prepared for civil war. If an individual renounces his or her citizenship without leaving the territory or having citizenship of another nation state they can expect to be deported and/or declared a terrorist.

I consider myself an anarchist, but this is one of the major problems with the ideology. The prevailing order cannot allow anarchic endeavours to succeed for fear of losing their own legitimacy.

Your citizenship determines how many rights you have you can't leave your country without a passport.. Canceling your citizenship is hilariously stupid. There are many people in the Imperialist world without a citizenship, their lives are very very hard. They are not revolutionary.

Ya i guess you're right, it is kind of pointless unless you do it just to simply symbolize your opposition to the state but that isn't really helpful either.

Yes. Destroy whatever you're being forced to be a "citizen" of.
