Is Askari X underground? I heard "Ward of the State II" and almost started to cry, and I'm still listening to it. I need his album!

BlackTHought
Malik B
Talib Kweli
Mos Def

yes I know these guys aren't as underground as they used to be

THe Roots aren't playin the corner of 5th and Pasyunk like they used to but they still don't get the respect they deserve

none of them do

Lardlad95, no disrespect, but what rappers/Hiphop groups do you know except for The Roots, Mos Def and Talib Kweli? Those cats ain't underground! Conscious rap DOES NOT EQUAL "underground".

Anyway, my favorites would be Ali Vegas, Apani B-Fly MC and Cy Young. Peep Ali Vegas new joint "If I"...it's HOT! Also "Critics" was one of the best songs of 2002.

Fuck this I did have some long ass arguementative shit in my defense but I don't need or have time for this bullshit

So I will conceed that The Roots and them Aren't underground, they aren't commercial, but they do get some play.

However I didn't say the Roots. I mentioned BlackThought and Malik B.

As solo rappers they get no play...infact BlackThought's solo album was never realeased...gotta find a copy.

Anyway it doesn't matter.

I retract my statement. Your right I'm wrong.

Though I ask you..Quality barely cracked the top 80

does that make Kweli commercial?

And Dialated didn't seel that much on their last album..are they commercial?

But hey if you want underground...the best I got for you is Common Threat.

They are aight. I'm gonna try and find some of there shit for you.

Thats a Milwaukee based rap group.

But hey I'ma check out some of the shit you said

Try and find something out about Common Threat though

by the way while trying to find some common threat shit I came across a punk Rock group also known as common threat

So if you look they aren't the punk rock one

and don't expect Common Threat to be their name for long...they will probably be sued soon

Well, Tupac is under-the-ground, haha, but I guess you're not looking for lame jokes today ;)

I have to say Promoe from Loop Troop, my favorite rapper bar none. Period.

Ouch! Maybe I shouldn't have made that post. I'm sorry if i came across direspecful, that was not my intension. I just wish you would broaden your horizions (not that I have anything to do with it really) but it can be a lil annoying when you ALWAYS like mention the same 3 rappers (Black Thought, Talib Kweli and Mos Def).

Now i was in no way trying to disrespect these folks by stating that they're not underground - they're all good rappers. Especially Kweli and Mos. I was not saying that they're "commercial", but they not the definition of "underground" either, right?

There are no hard feelings i hope? yeah please hook me up with something from "Common Threat"! You seem to have a good ear for conscious rap.

PEACE!

You forgot Malik B...I just starteed adding him

well I keep mentioning them because I haven't found anything better...yet.

I have broad horizons..as far as all music goes

but when I find something I really like I stick on it like white on a paper plate in a snow storm.

We are cool.

I have defintely taking a liking to Ali Vegas..especially "it Aint Hard to Tell" and "Critics" (you were right)

And I keep tryin to tell people at OKp that him and Kweli should collab.

Anyway I try to find shit if I can but sometimes it's hard.

Especially in a city were good rap is defined as Lil John and the Eastside Boyz....

It's all good though

O'm gonna try and find some stuff from common threat I lost their website though

my brother knows it so I'll ask him

Actually one of the members is on Che Lives.....He hasn't posted here though

it's marxist underground thouhg

but then agian they are just starting out.

Ali, Apani and Illusive... it would be cool if they got together on some project... hmmm... i haven't heard Vegas "It Aint Hard To Tell" yet...you know where i can find it? Is it a version of Nas old song or they just got the same titles?

btw, I'm in Sweden so i know that "underground" records are hard to come by. but there are a lot of "conscious rappers" that are rather big (KRS-ONE, Lauryn Hill, Common, etc)... peace

Is Mr. Lif really popular on underground circuits outside of Boston? The underground treats him like royalty around here but he fucking sucks.

I intentionally didn't define "underground" when I created this thread. I had typed up three or four definitions and didn't like any of em. In reality, "underground" is very hard to define and it all depends on what your definition of "above ground" is.

Not sure on the Nas thing.

But it's a good song

Ill-Milla, Slacks....what ever you call him he rips that shit.

"i remain Calm" is just an example of that

I was Born with 2 Tongues. Some pretty nice shit they got. They're not the only members of the group, there are two other guys (one of them being the infamous Denizen Kane). Mostly spoken word stuff, but they've got strong hip hop backgrounds.

Strictly underground group: Nitro Microphone Underground, they're japanese but arent very big over there either. If you're in to any of the foreign stuff or even hip hop in general then you should check them out.

Favorite MC of all time: Mos Def

Then you MUST know Promoe, right? Loop Troop rule!

But Petter sucks, except for that one song he did with 'em ;)

Dhul Fiqar

I'm from Iceland but I live in China (long story).

Loop Troop are really big in Iceland, at least among those that know their rap from their r&b if you know what I mean. They even wrote a song about how weird it was, it's called "In the back of the club" or something like that, and it's all about how they get free beer, pussy and drugs everywhere they play in Reykjavík :)

A friend of mine who's dealing went to one of their performances in a small club and gave them a big ass chunk of hash and hit a joint with 'em. See, that's what I love about 'underground' rappers :)

In response to the thread, well, I consider most drum n bass MC's as underground, in that dnb is hardly music for the masses, just yet. My faves are MC Navigator, MC Fearless and of course, MC Conrad of the Logical Progression Sessions with LTJ Bukem...

I am probubly going to move to China, just out of fear of them becoming the new machine that needs to be fought. I seriously need to spend College learning to read and write Mandarin though. It takes 5 years to learn that stuff....

You can learn basic Mandarin in about a year if you don't do anything else. The best place to learn is here, though :)

Still, I haven't really made an effort to learn, I change countries every three or four years anyway.

Being in the underground hip-hop scene...I have lots of 'favorites'. Mr. Lif is ill, dont get it twisted btw.
In no particular order...these guys are not commercial rappers (signed to a major label and/or dont rap about mtv bullshit), but can be found in search engines and kazaa. I suggest you do so

Because of the nick, right? It's spelled a little bit different in some places I hear, is this a particularly Egyptian transliteration or...?
