What are your thoughts on it?
Can virtual reality advance to the point where it seems just as "real" as the "real world"?

Will virtual reality replace or compete with the Internet, and modern entertainment (TV, movies, video games)?

Furthermore, if people choose never to leave the virtual environment (by being hooked up to life support systems) or just spend a lot of time in it, how will this bode for society? It could be an easy way to escape the real world.

I don't see why not. All that's required is to fool the senses to a convincing degree.

Will virtual reality replace or compete with the Internet, and modern entertainment (TV, movies, video games)? No I think they will be a niche of their own. We still use books despite the invention of newspapers, radio, television and the internet.

Furthermore, if people choose never to leave the virtual environment (by being hooked up to life support systems) or just spend a lot of time in it, how will this bode for society? It could be an easy way to escape the real world.Just as we have bookworms and World of Warcraft addicts, we will have people who spend most of their time in virtual reality. I don't think it would necessarily be a negative development - there's no reason why the real and virtual worlds cannot be enmeshed to such a degree that the virtual world is just as valid a part of the real world as the internet is, if not more so due to potential immersiveness of VR.
