Below is a list ofleft and liberal political theory including the question of race and women (I apologize for neglecting queer theory but I only know it second hand.) Fascism is represented from a left perspective, but I suppose you could read Mein Kampf if you can slough though it.

The ABC of Communism by Nikolai Bukharin
What is to be Un-Done? by Michael Albert
The End of Liberalism by Theodore Lowi
The New Industrial State by John Kenneth Galbraith
The State and Revolution by V.I. Lenin
Our Revolution by Leon Trotsky
The Civil War in France by Karl Marx
People or Personnel by Paul Godman
Fascism and Big Business by Daniel Guerin
The Mass Psychology of Fascism by Wilhelm Reich
Sexual Politics by Kate Millett
Women's Estate by Juliet Mitchell
Sisters of the Yam by bell hooks
Democracy Matters Cornell West
Race Matters by Cornell West

I really want to pick this one up: Contempory Political Philosophy: An Introduction (http://www.amazon.com/Contemporary-Political-Philosophy-Will-Kymlicka/dp/0198277237)
It's a summary and critique of the most important modern political philosophies; it's got marxism, libertarianism, liberalism, and utilitarianism. It's high up on my summer reading list.

You should acquaint yourself with these "classics":
Plato: Republic
Aristotle: Nichomachean Ethics
Confucius: The Analects
Hobbes: Leviathan
Locke: 2 Treatises of Gov't.
Anything by Rousseau
Marx: Critique of the Gotha Programme
Nietzsche: Geneology of Morality
Rawls: Theory of Justice
If you're interested in political economy, you might want to check out Political Economy: A Comparative Approach by Barry Clark. It discusses four general ideological currents and their many offshoots: Classical Liberalism, Radicalism (socialism goes here), Conservatism, and Modern Liberalism. As the title suggests, it goes for a comparative approach, so you will get to see how each ideology stands in regards to various political, social, and economical issues.
Also, check out Political Ideologies: An Introduction by Andrew Heywood. It covers a very wide range of ideologies and the theories behind them. I believe the full list of ideologies discussed is Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Fascism, Anarchism, Feminism, Nationalism, Ecologism/Environmentalism, Religious Fundamentalism, and Political Islam. It's a fairly short book, and doesn't go extremely in depth into any of the major ideologies, but it's a great start. Only bad thing is that it puts anarcho-capitalism in the Anarchist section instead of the Liberal or Conservative section where it belongs. :glare:
