View Full Version : Stop the War as a front for UAF?

Apparently someone has been complaining to my university student's union that I have been using an inactive Stop the War Society at uni as a front for UAF. How does this even make sense? People might come up with the SWP connection, but I'm not even a member of SWP.
I've been told by our union president that last occasion when UAF were on campus, I'm presuming he means a screening we put on of 'Young, Nazi and Proud'; the "Special Branch" (whatever the fuck that is ) were alerted to "extremist activity on campus", and "lots of alarm bells started ringing and it got quite tense at one point!"
I've got a feeling that this could mean that there is some BNP supporters inside my uni somewhere complaining about us.
Just thought I'd share this because I am completely confused by it all, and found it pretty funny.

I think the 'special branch' were on alert because they thought that the Nazis might attack someone. Sunderland has a big BNP presence. In the last couple of local elections they had someone standing in every single ward...

the "Special Branch" (whatever the fuck that is http://www.revleft.com/vb/stop-war-front-t109773/revleft/smilies2/laugh.gif)
I'd have thought if you werre an activist you would have known/come into contact with SB at one point? They're a wing of the police force.
As for this 'front' idea, its ridiculous. I can just imagine someone complaining about this only for some messed up reason if they were against the war but for racism. However, there is a crossover in the sense that many StWC activists (especially SWP and CPB comrades) are also active and involved with UAF activity, especially at this important time.
Your union president can do fuck all for doing UAF and StWC stuff.

Thought it was something like that :D
I don't really deal much with the police so never come across the term before. I'm too radical for them bastards

So special branch even exist? Thought they were disbanded years ago and remodelled into some bollocks like the Serious Crime Squad or some such toss?

I think they're still about, or whatever they're called now. I'm sure they investigated Dundee Uni Muslim Student's Association a few years back on 'counter terrorism' duties

Even if you have been using it as a 'front' why the fuck should it matter?
The only ones likely to take offence to the UAF are the fash, and if anyone takes their complaints seriously it says more about the university management than it does about you imo.

Well, it matters to the students union because StWC has an official society in the union, and UAF doesn't. So if I was using StWC to do UAF stuff at uni, then I could get in trouble for it.

Seems stupid to me.
When i was in SWSS, we used to do PSU, ANL and CND stuff, which didnt have it's own union recognised groups at our particular uni but we never got any shit over it.
Seems like your union leaders are sticking their noses in, arseholes.

Where Im from Special Branch are scum. If a guy joins the Police, we dont take a blind bit of notice. If he becomes Special Branch his family might even disown him.
STWC is a front for the UAF in the sense that they're both fronts for the SWP. Your union's position isn't silly, it isn't justified either: STWC like other leftist groups gets put through more shit then the rightwing organizations because conservatives and faux-liberals hate it.
Lets be honest, both organization's are largely run by the SWP and they're organized along those lines. This is simply the reality. People who find this problematic though find it problematic for the wrong reasons (they red bait, they're sectarian, and they want to criticize other's organizations instead of building their own or joining). The fact that the SWP invests time, effectively in meaningful work like anti-war and anti-fascist organizing, and they're able to direct large organizations that have many many non-SWP members and activists, is not a reason to criticize the STWC or UAF but a reason to praise the SWP.
