I was listening to some goth after a friend of mine told me to listen to some and I realised that the goth music, much to my surprise was not depressing at all. It was rediculously happy like something you would see on a kiddies television show.

Does anyone know what the deal is with goths? I don't understand why they act like their depressed yet listen to happy music. Listening to happy music will not make them happy. they want to be more depressed don't they?

Dunno, I never looked into the lyrics. Bela Lugosi anyone? That was kind of wierd...

Music from the gothic era, or stuff like Cradle Of Filth?

CoF is black metal. Goth is stuff like The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Him, Siouixie, etc. (maybee MortIIs or Type O Negative, but that would be stretching it a bit).

Erm...80s goth indie, like The Cure etc is just about as depressing as music gets. MitRS - you're speaking bullshit, again.

Wel I know NIN doesn't really qualify as goth but that is definitely not happy. I have yet to listen to my sister's other CD's but I'll give you my opinion on Sisters of mercy-Greatest Hits and Siouxsie and the Banshees-the singles.

Oh yeah, black metal has also been synonymously referred to as "gothic metal". So that's where I'm coming from with that one. Cradle of Filth is probably one one of the more happier things I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Precisely. Cradle of Filth is 100% self-parody.

Black metal is definitely influenced by goth (especially apparent in bands like CoF, Nightwish, MortIIs, Emperor, etc) but I wouldn't go as far as calling it goth. Dani Filth even said that he wasn't a goth. I guess you can call it goth metal but I would say that keyboard-ridden doom-metal such as Type O Negative is closer to the description of "goth metal" (hardline goth music fans really aren't fans of fast drums and screaming).

most people know that depression brings one closer to God or himself. It demand that one be still and assess life which in itself is a hell.

musicians and artists are special people almost genius. if one can grasp the subversiveness in the music then no matter what you listen to whether it's "die mutha fucker die" or "i don't wanna die, i don't wanna kill..." one learns to find hope and happiness eventually in great songs.

the prophets are no longer for they have all become ROCK stars!

OK, whatever you say irhabo, I can't be bothered to read your drivel.

Anyway, Sisters of Mercy is/are fucking cool, but I'm not so keen on Siouxsie and the Banshees. Please, someone write a list of goth bands so I can check them out. :)

actually, this complete wretched ***** moderator from darksonus informed me that the cure is "the epitome of goth" so you may wanna check that out. That's all I have really heard though so I would love to hear of some other goth bands if anyone happens to know of any.
