Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to completely eliminate the state’s welfare program for families, medical insurance for low-income children and Cal Grants cash assistance to college and university students.

What are everybody thoughts on this? There's no legislation as of yet I believe but this is interesting. What will be the social impact of this, and what do you think the response will be?

Wow.

Well I don't know about their state legislature, how liberal or conservative it is, but if they're Obamatards then they will reject it. If they are conservatives the silver lining is that this may raise revolutionary awareness among the masses.

The context is that the California state coffers are practically empty - they are stuck between a rock and a hard place since they're still trying to save capitalism there.

With a policy move like this, they are basically just putting a gun in their mouths and waiting for someone else to pull the trigger.

A revolt I hope. Schwarzenegger has been crushing California ever since he got into office; the citizens there thought it would be cool to have the Terminator as their governor but hey look at that it wasn't so cool after all.

Um...there wasn't much of a story there. I can tell you that I don't believe it either, no capitalist politician with any level of sanity would seriously even consider this much less plan it. I mean, they may want to, but it's a loser, a suicidal, impossible move that would destroy everything for them. And they do care about that. This is probably a joke from a very anti-GOP writer. There's no other explanation I can think of.

The total dismantling of all social programs in the united states is continuing! Regan would be proud, I am not. :crying:

This would probably triggers more racial and class tension if this ever happens.

Which is probably half intended on his part.

In a strange way Arnie reminds me of the evil German Dr Strangelove struggling to restrain his sieg heiling arm.

He probably refers to Republican party leader as 'mine fuhrer'.

What happened to the much publicized "end of welfare" in the US? This was supposed to have happened years ago...

i would love to see L.A, and S.F. with large banners with "to the barricades!" written on them. to eliminate the welfare state, even if it is established by the bourgeois, would be a disaster for everyone. a lot of people wont be able to afford medical bills, forget about college. if i lived in California, i would radicalize and start grass root groups at the mere hint of welfare being annihilated.

Wow.

Well I don't know about their state legislature, how liberal or conservative it is, but if they're Obamatards then they will reject it. If they are conservatives the silver lining is that this may raise revolutionary awareness among the masses.

The legislature is mostly centrist Democrats (right of Obama most likely) and they will probably vote against it.

The Governor just tried to get ballot initiatives passed that would freeze budget spending - voters rejected it.

So now the Governor is going to try and cut welfare and blame it on the voters rejection of the ballot initiatives - the legislature will probably reject it and Arnie knows it. It's basically politicians playing hot-potato with the budget crisis.

So education and govmnt worker's have had major cuts and all the politicians claim they have no choice... but, the radical alternatives are very easy to explain: tax the mf rich and get rid of 3-strikes laws and the prisons! Arnold ran on a platform of "we have to cut taxes for corporations or they will go to China" - and now he wonders why there is a budget crisis? California has more prisoners than proabably all of Western Europe and 3 strikes laws put people in jail for huge ammounts of time for selling pot, coke, or stealing a car radio. The prison system in this state is, even from a ruling class perspective, an unsustainable drain on the system. A section of the capitalists know that building prisons isn't the type of infrastructure that will lure corporations to the state, radicals should jump on this disagreement in the ruling class and exploit it like hell!

A movement against the prison system would be very popular among the working class and would get some liberals to help. Such a movement could potentially build something like a new civil rights movement or even revive the left. Prisons are the new Jim-crow in California.

They never learn do they? There's only one thing between thier cushtie lifestyle and immediate revolution and it's those scraps that the bourgeois throw from thier tables to the poor proletarians like welfare reforms.

He's either very brave or very stupid to try dismantle the pacifier of the public.

So Arnold wants to eliminate the safety nets put in place to keep people from revolting. Don't say we didn't warn you. ;)

With unemployment in the United states nearing 10% on the official figures and 11% in california, governor terminator is playing with fire if he proceeds with these savage neo liberal cuts. Protests over education cuts have already started and more actions may follow. Interesting times indeed

Thus, he is either more stupid than I believed or anticipates that the legislature would reject his proposal and thus shift the blame over to them. I suspect the latter. He is not that dumb.
