A.I.M. if you do not already know stands for American Indian Movement it was started in the Twin Cites of Minnesota in the 1970s to combat oppression and abuse by police. Eventually it spread and ended up being a revolutionary force much like the Black Panthers. They occupied Bureau of Indian Affairs offices in D.C., seized the Mayflower Replica on Thanksgiving Day 1970, occupied Mt.Rushmore in 1972, occupied the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1973, occupied Alcatraz in 1969, helped LCO Ojibwa in a takeover of a dam which flooded LCO reservation land, helped negotiate for the Menominee Warriors Society during the occupation of the Alexian Brothers Novitiate. While they're not revolutionary anymore I thought it would be good to share the history of the AIM. AIM has split into two diffrent groups still calling themselves AIM. I cannot find much on the split though it is on the wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Indian_Movement)article.

1975: MENOMINEE Warrior Society members seize the Alexian Brothers Novitiate in Gresham, Wisconsin. They will end their occupation on February 2, 1975. The brotherhood will agree to give title to the grounds to the MENOMINEE, but they will change their minds in July.Menominee Warrior Society Novitiate Takeover. There also is AIM Colorado, which of course is not affiliated with the AIM Grand Council. The two are at odds with each other.

AIM Grand Council would be able to lay claim to being the "original" due to the fact that they are based out of Minnesota and that they are part of the original AIM. The closest thing we had to AIM around here was the Menominee Warrior Society and they disbanded or were forced to disband I don't know which after the novitiate takeover.

That's really interesting. Their activites are very inspiring. It's a shame I had no knowledge of them prior to seeing this thread. Why are they no longer revolutionary Theory? What happened.

In my opinion after the Leonard Peltier case and the assassination of Anna Mae Aquash by possibly other AIM members is what caused the rift between the leaders of the original AIM and the eventual split. It seems to me that the Feds could have killed Anna and made it seem like AIM members killed her but I'm not really one for conspricy theorys. To put it simply AIM got to far into finger pointing to be really revolutionary any more. It seems all they do now is protest. The most revolutionary thing they did recently was threaten to blow up a lifesize model of the Mayflower other then that they haven't done much. If you go to powwows you see AIM members there but they don't hand out phamplets or anything. Look them up on Youtube the AIM chapter of Michagan has up a video of them exposing a white woman profiting off of Native American culture. They have the potential to be revolutionary once again but I doubt they would be able to re-organize and settle their diffrences.

AIM was inspirational, but was never revolutionary. Certain members were more revolutionary than others, but the organization as a whole never rose beyond reformism. Nonetheless, AIM has paved the way for a true revolutionary consciousness to emerge in NDN country, and has inspired many.
