View Full Version : Who is the best rapper? - I think it is Nas
Palmares
13th December 2002, 04:38
With Biggie and 2pac dead, Nas is the best (not that I actually like the two former that much). KRS-One is pretty good as well, but most rappers rhyme shit this days. Nas is lifting the bar, that's probably why Eminem is actually starting to have some better rhymes, but he still has a long way to go (especially with the homophobe thing).
By the way, how good is Nas' new album, God's Son?

Depends on what you mean by "best". My favorite voice has to be Mad Lion, but my favorite lyricist is definitely Promoe from Loop Troop.

My favorite emcee is someone off Rawkus. I don't care, any of them. Maybe Pharoahe Monch.

My favourite emcee overall has to be Big Daddy Kane. I'm not saying he's the greatest lyricist or the most conscious emcee but the man can seriously flow whether its freestylin or just straight rappin.

Are we talking Greatest of All Time (GOAT)?
OK then.......KRS-One. From the battle, to the rhymes, to the beats.....NO ONE can see KRS.
Chuck D? Come on. He had skills and his content was some of the greatest shit ever but can you see Chuck battling KRS? Come one KRS hands down.
E-Roc from the Coup? Ummmm....you obviously don't know anything about hip hop.
Big Daddy Kane? Perhaps. But where is he now? He couldn't sustain in the game.
Nas? He has skills. He's top ten right now. But no KRS
Big Zack? Come on....no comment
Mad lion? Cool but KRS could mop him up.
Mack Daddy or the Daddy Mack? That's tough they are such great lyricsts.....
Biggie? He's like number two
Pac? He tied with Biggie
So, no one wants to mention Mos Def, huh? He comes right after big, pac, and KRS. Mos Def is the greatest of the "newer" rappers. He will be in the game for a LONG time.
Don't sleep on Jay-Z either. He may not be top ten but the dude can flow.
Eminem. Content sucks. Skills though? He is amazing. Don't underestimate him either. If he would only say SOMETHING in his ryhmes!!!

I really hate Jay-Z, altough I am not a rap fan, the dude wears a shirt of Che, our symbol of ppl who give up every thing to make the world a better place.
Then u see his ugly head on tv wearing his Che shirt. Singing lyrics about more "*****es, bling bling" and u see his diamonds and gold chains. I mean the guy says, wears and lives the exact oposite of Che.
Fuck Jay-Z the dude is just a pafetic trendy.(Emenim is most pafetic rapper)

BDK would destroy KRS in a freestyle. Well maybe not destroy but you know what I mean. KRS may be one of the greatest lyricists but BDK is by far more all round than KRS. As for him not sustaining in the game, is KRS really still sustaining any more? Not many people even know who he is. He may be still bringing albums out but that doesn't mean he's still going strong.

KRS-One did a Nike commercial. He rapped over the Gil Scott Heron beat "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." He said "The revolution is basketball" at the end of the commercial.
Mos Def's "Umi" (i think thats what its called) is also in a Nike shoe commercial.
A Tribe Called Quest were in a Sprite commercial as was Pete Rock and CL Smooth.
Now you can't tell me Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Mos Def, and KRS are not some of the best MCs of all time. Doing a commercial sucks, it goes against my values, but it has nothing to do with ryhme skills.
BDK would lose to KRS. It would be a hot battle but I got faith in KRS. KRS is not that popular anymore, I think his last great album was "Return of Boom Bap" in like 93 or 94. His later shit was kinda wack, with only a few gems. But KRS is still out there puttin in work and where is BDK?
I hate what Jay-Z, Nas, and Eminem stand for. However, they are lyrically some of the best rappers on the planet. The realest shit I ever heard Jay-Z spit was on Busta Ryhmes "Anarchy" CD, track #20 ( i think, its the one with DMX too). Jay-Z may be a walking commercial but he CAN ryhme. No one wants to call Pac and Biggie on this shit though. They both had LOTS of jewlry, big cars, etc. What did Biggie rap about? Sure had some real shit but he also did the champagne/bling bling thing--don't forget that. Remember the Hypmotize video?
If you think someone from the Coup is a good rapper your idea of what a good rapper is is confused. Sure he may rap about worthwile things but his delivery is off, his diction sucks, he doesn't know where the hook in the song is....I could go on. I'm not saying he sucks, but just to put him on a GOAT list with Mos Def, Big, Pac, BDK, and KRS-One is like blasphemy. Just because the Coup rap about socialist ideals does not mean they are skillful in their craft. I LOVE what Zack says in a song like CIA but I don't think he could really battle someone like KRS. There is a difference between content and delivery. KRS, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Guru, Big Daddy Kane, 2Pac,--they all had/have a brilliant combination of both. Unfortunatly Eminem, Jay-Z, and Nas have the delivery but not the content. But when you put it on a scale, delivery and content are not on equal planes.
I would say that a good rap could be broken down like this: 70% delivery, 30% content. You need both to be the 100% best rapper. People like the Coup score a 30 in content but like a 20 in delivery, making them ultimately not allowed on a GOAT list.
j

14th December 2002, 21:31
I like the coup butthey have one great problem
Basicaly they are all those weak ass bling bling ho rappers except they are marxist.
There beats are basically the same
To be great you need delivery and ncontent
but to many people want only content....well actually not enough but I mean people like us.
Thats why I like Kweli, Mos, and Thought
each one can make a very concious song and still make a song that is just bangin and the best part is all of them can make it sound good.
Kweli-he can make "The Proud" and "Get by" but still make a fun song like "waiting for the DJ"
Mos- "Mr. Nigga" "Theives in the Night" both concious but he can still make "Ms. Fat booty"
Thought- "What they do" or "Water" both concious then you got "The Next Movement" which is one the banginest songs ever
they are all versitile

canikickit
14th December 2002, 23:10
I like Canibus, Xzibit and Ras Kass.
I don't think the content of the whole rhyme is important for a battle, but you've got to have quality one liners/couplets.

Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and since I mentioned those two, I may as well say Black Star. Common, The Roots.
Personally, I like Eminem. Considering the fact that he's pretty commercial, (some of) his lyrics do have a lot of depth. RATM has been commercial, and I don't see many people here ragging on them or Zack de la. Jay-Z is good as well. "Song Cry" is beautiful. And, I don't understand this deal about him wearing a Che Guevara shirt. So, because he's a rapper and he's rich, he can't have an appreciation for what Che stood for? That's a very bad generalization. I've heard that Jay-Z has talked about Che and how much he admires him. Hell, I own a gold class ring, Nike shoes, Adidas, and I like jewelry and nice clothes. Does that mean that I can't have admiration for Che?
Yes, Mos Def had "Umi Says" in a Nike commercial, but he also was very concerned about accusations that the Nike company owns sweat shops in foreign lands and had he not been assured that they didn't, he wouldn't have allowed his song to be used.
So, off of the tangent. I think Mos Def, Talib, The Roots, Nas, Common, Jay-Z, and Eminem are some of the better hip-hop artists/rappers around right now. Oh, and the Chilean group Makiza too. But, then again, I don't even listen to too much rap.

Nas is possibly the best, but he said "ain't no best". He was wack on Illmatic, shit for a while but back on track with Stillmatic, The Lost Tapes and from what I've heard from God's son too. KRS-One is awesome, but not quite as good as Nas. Tupac and Biggie were on par wit each other, but fucked themselves with all the gangstaar shit, resulting in their tragic deaths. Rakim is fucking awesome, shout out to him. But I must agree he is on the way down, but I still have hope in him. Chuck D is also awesome, he had some wack emceeing skills. Lastly, Eminem is another with really good emceeing skills, but he much like Tupac and Biggie, but two of his songs on the 8 mile soundtrack demostrate there is hope in him yet.
I think rapping is about the emceeing, and to add favour to the rhymes, we need some wack beats. A good rapper is a good emcee, and good beats make a polished song.

The main thing is, is NAS getting more, or less commercial now? I hate to say it, but I think more.

He's just a wannabe Pac, but he comes off actin crazy with his raspy ass voice. Just like Ja Rule, 'cept the shit DMX says is less annoying. I like some of his tracks, but I don't think he should be considered for best rapper. I don't think any commercial MC deserves it.

OK, Here are a few more comments in this extrodinarily long thread:
Boom Bap was KRS's last album that I played non-stop when it came out. I bought the self titled one and only liked a few songs. I have kinda given up on his albums. Live, though? I saw KRS two years ago and he is probably the best rapper I've seen live. (Busta Ryhmes is actually really good live too)
Jeru the Damaja? He was alright? "Da *****ez" was a good song. But he couldn't maintain.
Mr. Lif? Come on!! Are you from Boston? People sweat Lif up here in the bean (that's boston) but he fucking sucks!! He tries way too hard and comes out sounding wack.
Akrobatic? I like Ak. He needs better production but he can flow. I think next to Guru and Ed OG he is the best outta boston. (Fuck dumbass Benzino, fake fucker!!). Don't sleep on Esoteric, Chan, or Skitzofrenics either. I also heard one track from Paw Dukes who was nice.
How come everybody (including myself) has not mentioned Kool G Rap? He's the man!!
And for all you assholes that say that DMX is great or something equally stupid you need to check out hip hop like those mentioned here by those of us that know something about rap.
Nas has skill but he fucked up when he went with Murder Inc (Ja Rule, Ashanti, etc.). He's better than other commercial rappers cause he does have some concscious lyrics. But he needs to drop the bling bling and realize that hip, hop (not money) is king.

i am seeing KRS one tonight. also there will be: living legends, Del, 2Mex, and a few others.
Jeru is not the best rapper, but from what i have heard, he has to be up there. not top 5, but top 10 perhaps.

Best live show I've heard KRS is real good...though I'm leaning towards the Roots...aint seen tehm live but from what I heard the fact that they have a band enhances teh sound.
What we need to do is have a whole bunch of rappers battle.
KRS in his prime would be gangsta...but he aint teh same....anymore.

or Nelly vs. KRs live?

ok, i just saw KRS last night, and he kicked oh so much ass. he was cut off because of the 2am currfew of the place i was at, but he rocked it like nobody else that night. some came close (2Mex) but he ended the night well. also, on stage last night, Phoenix Orion (sp) who has been doing his thing for so many years, talked for a minute (while they were fixing the sound) about how he will talk about Del (which he did, while Del was there) and even try to go head to head with Supernatural, but that he wont even try to come off against KRS because of the fact of KRS one's talent and years in hip-hop. to give you perspective on who he will talk about, in the two times that i have seen Phoenix Orion perform, he has talked about Dilated Peoples, Supernatural, Del, and some others that i cant remember.

G.Dep is shit, once he rapped in a song about spagetti or some shit like that. That song got such a bagging.
Nelly and Ja Rule are super shit. KRS-One should diss Nelly more. DMX is crap, but not as crap as Nelly/Ja Rule. Tupac was good, but too much of a thug, same wit Biggie.
