View Full Version : RevLeft Musicians: Advertise yourselves here!

Right; RevLeft's got talent. This is a thread that I'm making upon the request of members to be able to advertise themselves in the music forum.
In regards to the direction of the music forum, it's to be geared towards aiding in the creation of music as well as the discussion about mainstream music. I also think it's a good reflection of the nature of this board as we are a community and as a community we support each other in our endeavours.
So whether you're a myspace MC or a classically trained pianist, here is a place for you guys to pimp yourselves.

This is the song my brother kindly refers to as "the mexican song that never ends".
It's a mix of my own music mixed with the main riff to malaguena.

Yo RevLeft musicians!
I make music on Fruity Loops, (ever since version 5!! :p)
I haven't been able to upload any mp3s since I arrived, but here is the first and only song I have made since I've arrived in the UK (albeit it's a 'cover')! I made it the day before yesterday. It's the cheesy techno version of 'Moonlight Shadow' by Mike Oldfield that I decided to create after listening to the Groove Coverage version which I found terribly unsatisfying :p
Here it is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqAGB0LIFe0).

Why the importance on getting signed to a label? The amount of debt that my friends have gone through after being signed is ridiculous, and hardly seems worth it to me. Maybe a small independent, but I don't really have that as a priority. All my records have been self-released, and we're doing the same for our band when we've finished recording - we're hoping to club some money together to get it put out on vinyl.

I've been a couple bands -- I play drums -- but this is my most recent, and we really seem to have taken off. We're called Ostriches and here's the myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/ostrichestheband, which as of yet, has 4 fans and about 100 views, with none of our recordings up yet. However, our Facebook is a lot better. Anyway, we've been compared to Fatima Mansions, The Wedding Present, Neutral Milk Hotel and Dexy's Midnight Runners. Here's our first and only recorded song at the moment; http://soundcloud.com/mutleycar/jimmy-and-the-frisbee?utm_source=soundcloud&utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=facebook&utm_content=http://soundcloud.com/mutleycar/jimmy-and-the-frisbee it's about a boy who loses his frisbee in park; we write our lyrics about rather strange things. Movies (Anti-Beat) (http://socialcritique.posterous.com/movies-anti-beat)
This track, "Movies (Anti-Beat)" came out of a strong desire to realize potential. The track itself does not really connect on any level. That is the point. It is meant to be an apathetic rather than passionate display of energy and power.
Originally entitled simply "Noise" I changed the name because I felt that the noise wasn't what was going on. I thought a lot of it had to do with politics. In reality, the track is more nihilistic than political, but where the nihilist feeds on power, this track feeds on style.
It is a rather simple and short affair really. There are no more than 5 tracks, each alternating panning sides. Some synthetic drums fill the background, the "anti-beat," as it were, they crowd around the bass itself saved only by the poppin' and slappin'. The guitar drones notes that would irritate an executive kind of guy.
The last track is comprised of various movie samples. They are for entertainment purposed only...

We're all leftists to varying degrees, and we have a few songs about the workers struggle and the general anti-capitalist struggle as well as some about more personal/existential affairs, alienation and one about religion. 1st EP will be fully uploaded soon, the second one later in the year hopefully.

4th June 2011, 22:56
Gang chants need to be louder and bulked out, in my opinion. If you're recording it for an EP I would consider getting some friends involved for it.
Vocals almost remind me of crass, not in a bad way. That is to say on the second song. Is it a different vocalist on the first? I don't really get why that is the case (ps your vocalist cannot hold the long notes, to the point it's slightly excruciating).
I also think the bass needs to be up - a lot. I can't hear it at all really. I understand that with a decent recording, less fuzzy vocal mic etc a lot of these problems would be alleviated. I hope i'm not being too scathing with my criticisms - it's hard being a band and getting a sound, and you're certainly getting there. Take these as constructive and not too much to heart.
Admiral Swagmeister G-Funk
4th June 2011, 23:32
Thanks for the feedback. Both tracks have the same vocalist, we put a slight distortion on the vocals for the second one as he doesn't have the voice for the song (I wrote it with Henry Rollins-esque vocals in mind). I think he should've sang the first track with more heart too as he does on stage.
I agree about the bass and the chanting too, for the chant we just set up two mics and had a load of people in the room shouting into them, it definitely needs to be louder. The vocalist is progressing though, our last guy was completely tone deaf so this guy is Pavarotti in comparison to us, he's much better live though especially with holding notes (or at least it sounds that way from my end of the stage).
Anyway I appreciate the constructive criticism, the recordings are essentially live, the only thing that's edited is the vocals. Hopefully we'll get a better sound if we can multi-track and get the bass turned up and when our vocalist progresses further.

owb0c5nZS9I you might prefer this one. still needs a bit of work and sounds 1000x better live but it gives you the idea. its got a nice bit of noise at the end too.

I'm hard at work on something huge.
Huge to me, at least.
I'm hoping to write a song every almost every day of the year. When I'm not writing, I'll try to record with my shitty mic and shitty instruments.
I'm planning on releasing each chunk based on the seasons, so the first volume will be released (I hope) at the end of November.
I'm saving up for a better mic, too. Probably a Snowball USB.

I've got no recordings of my punk band yet, but on the side I make black metal (or stuff that sounds like black metal at least) by myself. It's more along the lines of Burzum and Peste Noire, as opposed to the more commonly known, fast, aggressive AAAAAAAH stuff. I can play drums fairly well too so I'll probably re-record these when I can get a drum kit, as Garageband drums aren't amazing:

Nice, I like it, particularly the second one. Except the ride, the drums were pretty good for the most part in spite of being garageband ones, though I think the snare would've sounded better if it was a bit sharper (the equivalent of loosening the snare to get a little more vibration). All in all, I like them though, I'll definitely check out some of the other stuff you have.
You ever try making your own samples instead of the garageband ones? Makes a world of difference. I could try to send you some if you're interested (though I don't know exactly how I'd do that).

Seems I just keep doing BS and here's some more (http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/104322) - six pieces for solo guitar. It's noteworthy only so far as it's one of the rare musical offerings which require more time and brain activity to listen to than to compose. Not sure how that works, but...trust me on this one...

Cheers. :D I know the ride sounds a bit tinny, but when I recorded those ones I didn't mess around with the velocity or anything (which I've noticed does make the drums sound a lot better). I wasn't exactly worried about the sound to the point of perfection or anything though, as I was/am hoping to get these recorded on a real kit, or at least a digital one sometime soon anyway.

Y'know I was actually just working on a sample kit I made before I checked on here and saw your reply. They do sound a bit fake though when I'm doing fills, and changing the velocity doesn't seem to work as well as it does with the normal kit. But yeah, if you got some drum samples that'd be great (email I guess?). All I find online are either hip-hop or electronic kits... or ones worse than the Garageband drums.

Back to me now because I'm far more important, I recorded a bunch of shit with my band at the practice studios yesterday which I would post, but the quality is all fucked up so it's not really worth it. I can't wait to get some proper f00kin' demos up for people to hear.
Anyone wanna make beats for me?

Just got my acoustic tracks in my email. I don't know if I care for how he mixed it and everything but whatever it was free. I'll upload them tonight.

Ha, Tommy the Commie... I like it.
Yeah that production quality sucks.

Vocals are shittier than they're supposed to be, but oh well. Had to do all these myself at home with drum samples.

We desperately need to record a proper demo...
At least you have a legit mic. I use the sound recorder on my iphone.

Ha! I stood there screaming into my iMac.
Finally got some good drums done (EZdrummer) so all we need now is mics or some adapter things so we can record at the practice rooms.

Had to record a song for my music class using the school's recording studio. So I wrote a death metal song and recorded guitar and vocals with my friend Darius on drums. I mean its not perfect but I got an 88 on it 'cause I did a 10 minute, completely bullshitted presentation about it being a protest against the penal system and capital punishment beforehand. And hey, I like it.

And I return with some real time live-action solar-themed music (http://www.jamendo.com/en/list/a111761/light-headache). Oh yeah. You heard me right.
