How do you think President Obama should handle Guantanamo Bay and its inmates?

They should be freed without trial. The second best option would be trials held by an international court because they would not get a fair trial in either US or in the ocupied puppet regime country controled by the US where the inmates was captured.
And they should defenently not be held in gitmo. The last fortress of imperialism on Cuba has to go.

Well the Democrats have almost unanimously blocked (http://www.truthdig.com/eartotheground/item/20090519_democrats_block_funds_to_close_gitmo/) (I think the votes was something like 80 to 6) the funds to close the prison, and subsequently hold trials.
So it doesn't really matter what Obama thinks.

wont neccesarily get a fair trial in an international courtNo maybe not, so freed without trial would be the best option.

So it doesn't really matter what Obama thinks. What i find strange is that they need funds to close the prison, and subsequently hold trials. Would it not cost more to keep the prison up and running.

Freed to where? And there may in fact be legit criminals in there. I don't have answers to these issues, just bringing them up, its not as easy as opening the gates.

Of course it will cost money to close that base, think of all the stuff and all the people there, what are they just going to leave them be? The soldiers/civilian personell have to be brought back along with all the vehicles, equipment, data, etc...
Military bases are like small cities.

How about releasing them and apologizing for kidnapping and torturing them.

I really doubt Obama is serious about getting gitmo closed anytime soon. He is being so damn vague about the details that it's guaranteed to make congress vote it down. It just seems like he's trying to make it look like he's doing something while just shifting blame (not an uncommon tactic).
Anyway the thing that is depressing about this is that even if even if they close gitmo another camp will simply open somewhere else out of the public eye. As long as the bourgeois imperialists are in power this crap will continue.

Freed to where they where kidnapped.

Well in the long run it will cost more to keep the prison running.

The vast majority of those countries don't want them back. This is a serious issue, if we just sent them back to said country somehow, they would probably be re-arrested or killed.
So if some of the inmates in there may be criminals, they should all be held captive untill proven that they are inocent?
Did I say that? No. I clealy said i don't have the answers to these problems. I'm just pointing out that it is not so cut and dry as to what we should/can do in the situation.
Well in the long run it will cost more to keep the prison running.
Obviously, but the person I quoted seemed to be confused that it would cost any money to shut the base down and that such monies would need to be approved by congress. I clearly was not stating the reasoning that congress denied the funds, only the reason that funds are needed.

I did not say it was strange that it would cost money, just that they needed funds to close it down. They could use the money which is keeping the prison running.

Right, well congress didn't say "we don't have the money" they said "we're not giving you the money"...

Obviously as a facility where torture happens and human rights are violated, it should be closed down. For one, it's not even located in the US, but in Cuba so they should be trying to do something about this if they're truly Socialist(although I have my doubts with their new market reforms under Raul). About the inmates? If the brainwashed public truly believe them to be guilty they should at least be given a fair trial to determine this. All other crminals are allowed trials so why not these people? I doubt most of them were even guilty to begin with, but American Imperialism always comes first above human rights.

Indeed, but I think the discussion here is more how they should be released. All freed without trials, trials in international courts, etc.
I personally don't know my opinion on this matter.

I hope your being sarcastic here. What do you think Cuba has been demanding from US for the past 50 years (except removeing the blockade).
