So let me get this straight: you regard the Cuban Revolution as more important than 1917?
I sir, happen to disagree. STRONGLY

Edit: And I don't think this thread of a 'top five' veign is suitable for a thorough and political forum such as History. We don't just choose what worker's struggles and movements we prefer.

1. Spanish Revolution
2. Mexican Revolution
3. French Revolution
4. Haitian Revolution
5. Russian Revolution
Spain because it was libertarian communist, Mexican because of the scale and context, French because it set the standard for uprisings, Haitian because it outlined the ability for the oppresed to fight for their own future (contrary to ideas of fights against slavery being movements from above entirely), Russian because it involved strikes and mass street protests, but as far as I am concerned it was destroyed pretty quickly by the Bolsheviks soon after taking away its possibility to develop to a full revolution. Spain was definatly the most significant though.

I find it funny that several members think its fine to 'top five' their 'favourite' revolutionary struggles. Lazy, lazy politcs.
Especially when some are making sweeping generalisations about them. The whole Spanish Civil War being "libertarian communst", anyone?:laugh:

I believe that the Cuban Revolution brought more suffrage, freedom and equality than the Revolution of 1917 did.

why do we have to choose the "best" revolutions? arent all social revolutions (to the left of course ) a great accomplishment and should be celebrated accordingly. even though some of them didnt work out or wernt as successful as we would have wanted we should be proud of the brave men and women who fought for the revolution we all fight for today...sorry rant over things like this just irritate me :blushing:
EDIT: bottled water wins hands down :D

So you see a nationalist revolution being more 'important' than a socialist one?

Pretty much common knowledge. The revolution was never a supporter of socialism or communism until they had to look to the USSR for fincancial trade and support. The revolution was never founded on communist grounds, indeed the Communist Party of Cuba was founded in 1965.
"I know the world thinks of us, we are Communists, and of course I have said very clear that we are not Communists; very clear." - Fidel Castro, 1959.

Nonetheless, from the very beginning, they confiscated the holdings of imperialists in Cuba and began equitable distribution. Perhaps if they had declared it from the beginning they would have been crushed via intervention. Moreover, Cuban nationalism was and is the nationalism of the oppressed. I don't recall it ever being big on "uniting" poor Cubans with the bourgeoisie, because Cubans have always understood that there were sellouts (i.e., Cuban aristocrats who were in bed with imperialism) in Cuba.
Moreover, the USSR is no longer around. If what you say is their rationale for turning socialist, why are they still socialist, in your mind? Merely to save face?

Fidel poised himself as a nationalist so he wouldn't have to ruin relations with the West, he didn't plan to but they labeled him as a Communist.
And he was.
His revolutionary army was filled with Communists.

This is why Revleft is Revleft. "Rating" revolutions is juvenile enough, but the fact that the October revolution is consistently in last place/second last place in this popularity contest speaks volumes.

My thoughts exactly. You are also pretty close to the mark on the Cuban revolution.

Listen to this song again. Despite the name, the beetles were not talking about a "revolution". The whole song is about other people trying to talk to them about revolution, and the beetles trying to talk them out of it,taking a metaphysical line of bourgeois-pacifist class conciliation, hedonistic apathy and knee-jerk anti-communism.
John Lennon made some better (still Utopian,) songs after ditching these mop-headed clowns, but this song in particular is vile.

Do you also believe in Santa claus?
I would recommend "Cuba: The evaporation of a myth" put out by the RCP, if you can find it.
I'm not saying that I am against the Cuban revolution (You are correct that there were many communist fighters in the 26th of July movement, just as the Cuban Marxist-Leninists today remain within the heavilly revisionist and ailing party,); I am saying that like many of the countries that had succesful revolutions, there was room for (socialist) improvement.
During the Cuban revolution, the Cuban proletariat were sidelined in favour of the petty-bourgeoisie, and even the "communist party" of Cuba was an after-thought to incur the favour of Soviet aid, 5-6 years after the succesful revolution.
Again, I defend the gains of revolution, but the failed fruit of revisionism on that island must also be aknowledged, and the Cubans have paid a high price for un-necesary mistakes, which they continue to pay to this day.
