This thread is dedicated to rants about any aspect of music. I'd like to open with a rant about my favourite post-grunge-pop Canadian weirdie beardies....

What a bunch of ****s Nickelback are. How pretentious, how twatty, how...shit. I mean, could they be any more derivative?? Grunge ended with Kurt shooting himself. Nickelback have about as much to do with grunge as Britney Spears do. Of course, as if they're music isn't bad enough, there's Chad pissing Kroeger. What a twat he is. You just have to look at him to see how moronic he is. What kinda **** has a beard and crinkly hair?? He looks like Jesus' fuckin poodle doing a model shoot. Christ alive...and y'know, I heard a story about Nickelback. At a gig in US, Kroeger refused to finish their set until this guy heckling them was kicked out the venue. And they weren't even headlining this gig!! And...he can't sing. And...he got in a piss with a Kerrang journalist once cos he called them "boring". He was completey incapable to provide any argument apart from saying "Radiohead and Oasis are boring" and "how many bands sing about domestic violence?" (Obviously, Mr Kroeger isn't clued up on nu-metal).

And...the worst part of all is...the girl I'm kinda in love with is a fan. Oh the pain... :(

My rant:
this past wednesday night, my friend and i drove over an hour to LA to see Jurassic 5 and the Beatnuts play at the Wiltern, but, when we got there, we found out they cancelled the show! yup, after my missing of the Del, People Under the Stairs and Aceyalone concert a few days earlier, i was pissed! j5's hometown of LA, and they cancel a show, what the shit is that?!?!

sidenote: all was not lost. we ended up going to a show of about 40 people in pomona, which was kinda cool. one of the guys from Shapeshifters, The Limbs, and Confident was there, so that turned out to be pretty good. only like 40 people at this one, and saw some nice breaking and freestyling, so not all was lost.

Here, I've got a rant: Bouncers at hip hop events. They can't be cops, and they can't be security guards, so they always feel the need to push people around. Mother fuckers are always on power trips. Here's a scenario:

I have a friend who owns a hip hop clothing company out of San Diego, my hometown. He was driving up to LA to see his friend DJ topspeed spin at the Out For Fame finals, a breakdance competition at The Grand Avenue club. He wanted me to go up there and help him out at the booth. Me, tucows, and two of our other friends drive up there, and because southern california is grossly over-populated, the traffic was horrendous. After about a 3 hour drive, we get to the club. It's packed, and things were going good. But the first thing we notice is how the bouncers are acting like nazis. They gave a kid the boot because his eyes were bloodshot. We get in, and play it low key and find the booth where my friend was working. Everything's going good, we watch a couple of b-boys doin there thing. Then about 2 and a half hours later, the official crew battles start. While tucows and my friend Joey were up on the balcony, me and this kid Hector were chillin behind my friend's booth. We see the crews start to battle, when all of a sudden they start throwing punches at eachother. The gorillas quickly rush in to break it up, then the idiots on the floor won't make the circle bigger. I mean, how retarded is that? You finally find a good venue to have a hip hop event, and all the idiots on the floor have to act tough and fuck it up for everyone. So after that, we see what supposedly was the best battle ever. And me and my friend hector were standing on a platform connecting two booths together. This steroid pumping, 50 dollar gap shirt wearing bouncer comes in and tells us to get off of the platform. Fine, we comply. Towards the middle of the battle, I sat down on the booth bench 'cause I felt a migraine comin on, and Hector starts standin on the chair. Meanwhile, the bouncer with the gap shirt comes stormin back, tell Hector to get the fuck off of the chair and to come with him. I'm freakin out 'cause I thought they were gonna toss him out, so I was about to hop over the table, when my friend who owned the booth ran outside and got in an argument with the bouncer. I thought fists were going to fly once more. Needless to say, I didn't want him to jeporadize his booth or his company, so I just grabbed tucows and Joey and told them to go outside to see if we can get Hector back in. Outside, we see him standing by the door. 2cows, that fuckin bigmouth had to say "Fuck this shit" and he got thrown out as well. So to make a needlessly long story short, we drove 3 hours, to stay 2 1/2 hours, and I missed getting to meet all the DJs. Fuck 50 dollar shirts.

i have not heard anything on why they cancelled the show, but we drove 1 hour 15 minutes to get there, and i had been waiting for this show. kinda pissed.

also, i went to the Knitting factory last night to see the beat junkies. yea, this has not been my week for shows. i expected them to perform like they did when i saw them at audiotistic a few years ago in long beach, but i was oh so dissapointed this round. they had one dj set, on the balcony (which i couldnt get up to because im only 18, and you have to be 21 to get up there), and not all of them were even there. they switched off (to the 3 that were there). i think about 99% of the people there expected a real show, because when i left, nobody was dancing, and this place was supposed to be a club like experience. so, once again, in the span of a few days, a drive to LA for something that just pisses me off.

This might be a redundant rant, but here it is: I hate Posers. Or Poseurs. Or whatever you call them...

They're on to every scene you can think of...Hip Hop, Metal, Rave, Punk, DIY, Emo, Hardcore, Tribal House, Techno, you name it, they're all there, standing around in their awkward little sneakers, pretending to enjoy the music because it's the "in" thing now, trying to mosh or dance to the "latest" craze in pop music, name-dropping all the popular bands or musicians because they think they can get Brownie Points for being up-to-date...Ah, bullshit.

But who's to say who's a poser, and who isn't?

Are posers the kids who just bought the latest Nirvana album because Kurt's suddenly the shit all over again? Are posers the kind of people who wear sleeveless polo-neck fur jackets and orange-tinted Ray Bans to Gatecrasher parties? Are posers the kind of kids who tell you Fred Durst didn't sell out but was just trying to earn a living?

Is Marilyn Manson a poser? Yes, I think he's the most shameless "The Cure" wannabe since, well, I can't think of anyone else, really.

I used to be so into the underground scene in Kuala Lumpur, my capital city. There'd be gigs every weekend from local hardcore and Nu Metal bands like Projek AK and Blind Tribe to post-grunge diehards like Motherland & FLU to household punk superstars like ACAB (All Cops Are Bastards) and The Suspects...Hey, we got our own cosy little scene over here, and for a time I was very much contented to grow my hair long, roll mammoth spliffs during soundchecks and chat up chicks with pink spiky hair. But all of a sudden, the scene is wanning, it's becoming "endorsed" by companies like Panasonic & Tower Records, it's bloating up into an ugly, mean little corporate rock whore's gangbang teenage fuck-fantasy, and it's sickening to see people step out and say they're the best because everyone else isn't playing the latest "craze" in town.

So, what did I do? I swan-dived off that stage and now I sort of moved on, I'm exploring other stuff, other types of music. I think that it's just so narrow-minded to listen to just one thing, one band, one type of music, whatever...Shit, that doesn't mean you ignore all the good stuff you used to listen to, but hey, trying out other stuff helps you distinguish what appeals to you better, and hopefully, it's not polka.

I'm really into drum n bass now, and although I reckon this form of music is soon going to explode over here into a commercial cocksucking ***** for mobile phone jingles, I'm going to tune in for a while and just see what happens...Fuck knows what I'm going to be into after this, but you can bet your knickers it's not going to be Justin Timberlake... ;)

I'm totally feeling that. It's disgraceful...I've been listening to 'heavy' music for almost half my life now, and I'm surrounded by kids my age talking about how "fuckin awesome the new Rage album is". It's disgusting, they've probably never even heard of Faith No More, Slayer, Sabbath and all the other bands who created nu-metal. If I was to tell someone I like metal now, it's taken to mean I listen to Fred Durst and Linkin Fart.

What annoys me even more is the nu-pop-punkers, who listen to Blink 182, Bowling for Shit and The Ataris. Fuck's sake...have they ever listened to a Descendents album?? If I tell someone I'm a punk fan, apparently that means the aforementioned three, Green Day and New Found Glory. It's terrible.

I guess it's the same symptom in both: corporate co-optation of what was previously perceived to be "alternative" music. Ever since nu-metal kicked off, more and more kids have been listening to and playing guitars. However, the vast majority of the good music coming from the guitar scene won't be played on Top of the Pops or Radio 1. It infuriates me that most of the kids I hang out with at college claim to like the same music as me but haven't heard of a single band I mention. Maybe I should be a little less tightly strung...

I think Avril Lavigne is funny. I think it is very amusing that people get so upset by her. I really do, it's ridiculous. She doesn't annoy me because I have heard her music/seen her videos about three/four times.

I don't like Kelly much either, in fact I don't like any of the Osbournes, they fuck me off. anyway, that was a little rant because i'm fed up of hearing about them.

OK, I have some more to say now:

I hate it when stuff gets over played on the radio even before it's come out. I'm not just talking pop and stuff, which is sickening even when played once, I'm talking good shit like LiamLynch's "United States of Whatever" Electric Six's "Danger! high Voltage" and Feeder's new singel. I love Feeder's new single but now I'm getting bored of it and I know if I ever got the album I'd nearly always skip that track.

Concerning Electric Six and Liam Lynch, they sound much better in the evening, played be Lamacq or Peel, maybe I'm just a snob but it gives them something more when played among a load of cool, slightly obscure tracks, rather than J Lo and co.
