This is old, but it's still pretty cool. I find it interesting how there's actually rumors out there that Mario was meant to secretly be Communist propaganda. Let's just say that's one way to turn children towards Communism! "Mommy, I want to be just like Mario!"

I think Super Mario, if anything, is profoundly reactionary.

Mario and Luigi are supporters of a monarchy which is constantly attacked by another, more militaristic monarchy. This is also quite typical of video game worlds. It is more often about preserving an old order than to create something new. If its going to be a revolution, its most often a counterrevolution.

That makes it quite hard to actually sympathise with the heroes.
