I share Emma Goldman's enthusiasm for Thoreau's ideals. In some ways he was a product of the first (and last) US utopian socialist movement, but proposals like civil disobedience squarely placed him above the easy fodder of small scale experimentations.
I also find myself agreeing with his dietary routine: not a vegetarian, but skidding the line.

Yes, I hate when conservatives and pro-capitalist take his work to justify their own ideology. Though, he denounced industrial capitalism. Well, I am vegan, but I support the "pescatarian" life for his time. He read the Bhagavad Gita which made this decision for him to cut meat and alcohol from this diet.

I think civil disobedience is the first step to revolution. I personally hate transcendentalism (as a type of writing), but still love the great ideas proposed by Thoreau.
