View Full Version : the death penalty and possible exceptions
I know most people here, including myself, are against the death penalty.
But I wonder if there can be exceptions where it is justifiable. specifically when it comes to mass murder. Surely few here would object to someone like Hitler having been executed.

how about a planned murder and enslavement treason and deliberate endangerment of others like say not taking safety measures in a mine and having dozens of people killed or contructing buildings with crap materials just to save some money.
also rape is in my opinion worthy of a death sentence.
most importantly we should look at the intent of actions not the results because i do not give a fuck if you managed to kill someone but that you tried to is enough for me.

Do we ever entrust the state to kill people in the name of justice?
No.
thank you.

Obviously we want to undermine the power of the capitalist state, (and thus the power of the capitalist state to administer the penalty of death) that doesn't mean we should care when our enemy the state kills those who are also our enemies (fascists, crime syndicates) or that we ourselves will never administer the penalty of death. (Although our actions will be focused less on penalizing and more on taking the actions necessary to further our goals, preserve our social order, etc.)

What about chemical castration? If somebody is a serial rapist, take these sexual urges away from them.
Anyway, to get back to the topic of the death penalty, I personally think it's a barbaric and outdated penalty. Yes, somebody could be a mass murderer, but there's other ways of dealing with them. For example, labour camps. It's not exactly cheap to keep somebody sitting in a prison for life. Besides, if they're just sitting there they wouldn't really be learning any better. In a labour camp these people could be giving back to the society they took from. Of course there's the other side of this argument: the whole human rights violation thing. First off, the murderer violated somebody else's right to life so it's only fair he/she gets treated a certain way, but not so harshly that his/her rights are taken away as they're still a person. Keeping that in mind, note that i've said labour camp NOT slave camp. These inmates would still be fed three meals a day and have leisure time once they're finished their work for the day.

"labour camp NOT slave camp"
What's the difference? Slaves are still feed and still have leisure time.
If you are forcing someone to work, that's slavery. Even if you dress it up in "communist" rhetoric.

I think the simple premise of dealing with violent criminals is that you prevent them from hurting people again by the best means possible.
We should never give the sate the power to 'legally' kill people. I don't know about in the future, I couldn't say. There are certainly people I'd rather were dead, and if say, a rapist, was caught by a group of people (that isn't the state), either in capitalism, a revolutionary period or communism, and they killed him, I wouldn't be bothered at all. But if the state caught him and could legally kill him, although I'd be glad he was dead, I'd worry about who else the state could get awa with killing. So if we give the state the power to kill people, thats very dangerous and so I oppose a state imposed death penalty.

I fully agree. As i've mentioned in my previous post I oppose the death penalty, however I didn't really get into details. First off, the state could easily abuse this power to kill people by trying to use it in the case of less serious crimes rather than rape or murder. There is also always that small chance an innocent person could be framed and convicted. This penalty is rather final. At least with prison they could just be released. Just think about all the compensation that would have to be paid out to families of wrongly accused people put to death.

I am of course joking I hope we get to kill CEOs or if we can't kill all the CEOs let's just kill the tobacco industry CEOs.And inevitably threads on the death penalty degenerate from 'in self-defence' to 'for kicks'.
