Quick question, i'm doing some private research into sniffer dogs - can one of yall help me out?

Anyone got a list of substances that can be detected by sniffer dogs? Like a list, cannabis - yes, LSD tabs - ? etc.

Cheers

I think it depends from country to country and on what they're trained to go after.

They are usually trained to go after the nuts here.

I don't really think there is a list as such, they have such delicate senses of smell that they can know to go after a specific person's scent - going on that I'd assume they can smell out most drugs.

Gosh I mean they can even be trained to sniff out date rape drugs: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/southern_counties/3240109.stm.

I'm pretty sure they can sniff anything and everything they're trained to, and from my experiences during the irish troubles, they can even pick up bomb materials, like semtex.

Okay, well in that case i doubt that a routine sniffer dog would be trained to sniff everything from drugs to explosives. Rather they would probably be trained for either/or? And further, that there might be dogs that are trained for specific drug detection - say cannabis, speed, cocaine, vs. like mushrooms or LSD?

Well this (http://www.nppsecurityservices.com/patrol_guard_sniffer_dog_training.html) security services site offers sniffer dogs and says:

Pro-active drug dogs are trained to detect:
Cannabis - resin & herbal
Heroin
Cocaine
Amphetamine
Ecstasy (MDMA)
Firearms
Ammunition
Banned food products

I don't think they'd spend much time sniffing for mushrooms or LSD...

Hell! Dogs can even smell a year dead body from the bottom of a harbor. The question is what the dog is trained to detect. So it depends on the dog unit/country/trainer tec...

I am too much of a dog person to harm any dogs just to smuggle stuff through... :crying:

I would strongly suggest not trying to smuggle stuff in to Tasmania dude, unless you know what you are doing. Asking questions on RevLeft doesn't count for proper research.

Oh, and I think that most of the dogs in Tassie are going after fruit and veg rather than drugs. But, then again, I could be wrong. I don't know.

Oh, and I just found this: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/05/02/2233873.htm (If I'm correct about this all being about Tassie, sorry for making you paranoid, feel free to edit out the nasty bits.)
It may well be that publicity from the cops is worth more than anything you can find from RevLeft.

Try ringing up the cops (from a payphone if you are paranoid), and say you are writing a paper for uni or something. (Or get a younger sibling/cousin/friend to say for high school.) Ask what drugs the dogs can sniff out, what other substances, how long they are trained for, what sort of schedule they go through each day, what sort of dogs make the best sniffers etc. (Though in enough other questions about the dogs that they don't get suspicious.) That'll get you good info.

Lol am, i'm not really doing research - s'all good.

Yeah, but if you are doing "research", the place to start is ringing up the cops and saying that you are doing actual research (rather than "research"). So yeah.

It really depends on what they are trained to find. Call your local law enforcement and ask them what they teach the dogs to find. I know for a fact that K9 units cannot smell LSD though. LSD is basically odorless, and if layed on unmarked paper can be almost impossible to recognize.

Hehe, i know i know. Thank you, i wasn't trying to suggest your advice was not sound or useful :)

Most sniffer dogs are trained to search for a particular type of scent, i.e. drugs or explosives. It generally depends on the dog you run into.

The most common for my area are for the school district. They search for weed and tobacco in lockers once a week.
